Last night, alongside our friend, Seema Amble from a16z, we hosted finance and accounting leaders across the Bay Area to discuss how AI is reshaping our workflows. Some of my personal takeaways from the night: 1. AI is vastly reducing the time spent on complicated writing tasks. Finance leaders are using ChatGPT to write technical accounting memos, draft board reports, generate images for company all hands and document their teams processes (no more bottlenecks when folks are OOO). 2. AI is great at providing feedback on how to build the financial model or answer questions like “how does index match work again?”. Unfortunately, it can’t build the model for you considering the historical data, your expectations for the future and relevant benchmarks. Not yet, anyway. 3. 99% right is 100% wrong in finance and accounting. If an AI agent categorizes all but a few of the transaction correctly…it can create more work not less for teams already strapped for time. A key responsibility of our teams is reducing risk to the organization. Human judgment will be a necessary component of AI implementation within finance, at least in the short term. 4. The work available to junior employees is quickly getting consumed by AI agents and AI enhanced tools. This leaves an open question: where do junior employees fit within our teams and how do we train the next generation of finance and accounting leaders? 5. Maybe giving the CEO an AI chatbot on top of the financial model is a bad idea. Sure, they can stop using the CFO as their personal FinanceGPT but they’ll also miss important context. Plus, we like our jobs. Sorry Nicolas Kopp :) If you’re interested in attending our future events, send me a DM or comment below!
