Hiring isn’t a task to check off before busy season—it’s a year-round mindset, and this post nails it: the best teams aren’t built in a hiring scramble; they’re cultivated through a steady pipeline, growth-minded hiring, and clear career paths???
The guy behind LeanScaper | Transforming Lives & Businesses | Keynote Speaker, Business Coach, Former Top 100 Landscape and Snow Contractors in North America
Three Key Things to Remember About Spring Hiring for Landscapers Using the LeanScaper Method Spring hiring is one of the most critical processes in a landscaping business. The right hires set the tone for productivity, profitability, and customer experience throughout the season. Here’s how to approach it the LeanScaper way - systematically and with a long-term mindset. 1?? Hire for Growth Mindset, Not Just Skills Most landscaping companies make the mistake of hiring purely based on experience. The LeanScaper method prioritizes grit, adaptability, and a willingness to learn over years in the field. ? Look for candidates who ask questions, show initiative, and take ownership of their work. ? Avoid “fixed mindset” hires - those who resist training, new methods, or feedback. ? Use structured interviews with situational questions to uncover problem-solving skills. Example: Instead of asking, “Have you operated an excavator before?” ask, “Can you tell me about a time you had to learn a new skill quickly on the job?” The answer will tell you if they’re willing to adapt. 2?? Build a Hiring Pipeline - Don’t Just Scramble in March Landscapers fail when they treat spring hiring as a last-minute rush. The LeanScaper approach treats hiring like sales: a year-round pipeline that attracts and nurtures great candidates. ? Keep job postings active all year - top talent is always looking. ? Create a referral system that rewards current employees for bringing in quality hires. ? Use automated hiring workflows with Team Engine to pre-screen and engage applicants efficiently. Example: Instead of waiting for a mass hiring push in March, start building relationships in the off-season—attend trade schools, career fairs, and apprenticeship programs. 3?? Don’t Just Fill Roles - Structure Career Paths Retention starts at hiring. If your job ad says “laborer” with no mention of advancement, you’re attracting short-term thinkers. The LeanScaper method positions every role as a Trade - part of a long-term career path using Greenius to power your apprenticeship process. ? Write job ads that sell growth (e.g., “Start as a Crew Member, Become a Certified Tradesperson in 2 Years”) ? Offer on-the-job training with clear skill-building benchmarks. ? Use Greenius or other training systems to certify new hires quickly and track progress. Example: Instead of just saying “$18/hr Landscape Laborer Needed,” say: “Start an apprenticeship at $18/hr with clear path to $28/hr in 3 years. Learn advanced landscape skills, earn industry certifications, and grow into leadership.” The LeanScaper Hiring Mindset: ? Don’t settle. A bad hire costs more than an empty seat. ? Don’t scramble. Build a steady talent pipeline all year. ? Don’t just hire workers. Hire future leaders. Spring hiring isn’t about just getting warm bodies on the crew - it’s about building the team that will scale your business. Build the People ?? Build the Company What’s your hiring strategy for this season?

It’s events season in the #GreenIndustry! Conferences, field trips, and industry meetups are in full swing—but are you making the most of them for your team? Bringing employees to industry events isn’t just a nice perk. It’s a strategic move that can fuel growth, spark new ideas, and deepen their commitment to your business. But to see a return on that investment, you need a plan. Here’s what successful landscaping, lawn care, tree care, and snow removal companies do to ensure their teams walk away from events with real value: ? Send the right people to the right event. Not every event is for every employee. Hands-on training? Send field staff. A leadership summit? Bring your future leaders. Some companies even rotate who attends each year to get fresh perspectives. ? Use it as a reward for high performers. Industry events can be a powerful incentive. Employees who are hungry to learn and grow will bring back insights that benefit the whole team. ? Set clear expectations. Networking, learning, and idea-sharing should be the priority—not hanging out at the pool. Some companies require employees to take notes, attend different sessions, or bring back key takeaways to discuss post-event. ? Follow up & implement ideas. A conference without action is just a vacation. Hold follow-up meetings to discuss what was learned and how to apply it to your business. The challenge, as discussed in this article from the #NALP, is that not everyone can go. You might get pushback from employees who weren’t selected. Budget and timing (especially during peak season) can also be limiting factors. The leaders quoted in this article say that transparency in selection and rotating attendees can help ease these concerns. Why does any of this matter? Because the best companies in the industry invest in their people this way. If you want to develop leaders, expand knowledge, and stay ahead of competition, bringing employees to events is a SUPER smart move!

Team Engine has been on the move connecting with industry leaders, customers, and partners across the country. ?? GROW! 2025 Marty Grunder and The Grow Group hosted an exceptional conference in Columbus, OH that included a behind the scenes tour with our customers at Hidden Creek Landscaping. Their commitment to culture and values was on full display, including how they recognize employees for embodying company values. While in Columbus, we also hosted a customer appreciation dinner with Inova and even got to celebrate Kian from Heritage Landcare’s birthday!??? ???SmartCon In Phoenix for Weathermatic's SmartCon, we had great weather AND great conversations with landscapers about their business goals and how Team Engine can help achieve them. We also co-sponsored the JW (Justin White) Group event with Aspire Software at an arcade bar, mixing networking with a little pinball fun. "Growing a green industry business comes with a bunch of challenges, and it's awesome to see industry leaders like Weathermatic and The Grow Group going above and beyond to put resources and best practices in front of operators," said Team Engine CEO Carlos del Pozo. "We particularly love getting to attend these events so we can be face-to-face with our customers." A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared insights, and connected with us. Our team is already looking forward to the next one! (which, by the way, is this Friday in Santa Cruz for Justin White's Massive Action Mastermind ??)
