I had the privilege of attending the Tealium Digital Velocity 2025 event in London. Featuring speakers from some of the top brands like Lloyds Banking Group, Compare the Market, Royal Mail, Legal & General, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the sessions were rich with insights into customer data strategies, AI-powered personalisation, and the evolving digital experience ecosystem. A key focus was demonstrating how Tealium's tag management platform and CDP enable complex use cases and deliver tangible business value. While I couldn’t attend every session, here are some key takeaways from sessions by Chris Stone, Christoffer Gullestrup, Nathan Stockford, Marcin Denisiuk, Mike Anderson, Johnathan Conlon, and Simon Taylor. P.S. – I haven't included Hannah Fry's most entertaining session, but FYI, the key takeaway was that 'poop' is the most human word possible (along with some other stuff like how the 'Kahneman effect' creates the illusion of success and how quantum computing will transform encryption and the AI landscape). Customer-centricity and agility are essential for both successful generative AI adoption and scalable personalization. This requires a shift from siloed, technology-centric approaches to centralized, data-driven cultures. ??Pandora's Igor Pluznikov shared their journey to scaling ??personalisation. Initially, they faced significant challenges across decentralised request systems, siloed departments, disjointed data and slow development cycles, hindering the ability to deliver personalised customer experiences. Pandora's transformation offers valuable insights: ?Streamlining demand centrally: They streamlined their demand workflows to funnel requests from local to global teams, improving efficiency in meeting data needs. This also included the creation of a dedicated Paid Media Tech. Team, demonstrating the value of specialisation rather than a single demand queue for all types of requests. ??Data-Driven Evolution: Their personalisation strategy evolved from a rule-based approach to a data-centric model focused on building a robust data foundation and leveraging AI ??. This involved unifying customer data, standardising data patterns for third-party & internal system consumption, enriching profiles, and focusing on real-time streaming. ????????Building a Data Culture: They invested in building dedicated teams for data strategy, engineering, and analysis. Success also hinged on data governance, defined ownership, and automated testing to ensure data quality and reliability. They also focused on standardising data patterns to enable data to be used by 3rd party and internal systems. Smitha Dunwell from Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Modern Data Strategy: ???Generative AI is currently navigating data, security, and integration challenges, highlighting the importance of a solid data foundation for its successful adoption and application. ??Execs recognise the transformative potential of generative AI but struggle with data strategy and quality, emphasising the need for robust data infrastructure and management practices. ??A modern data strategy is crucial for value creation in today's data-driven environment, requiring a shift towards customer-centricity, agility, and scalable technologies away from a traditional technology platform and solution-centric mindset. ??Building a comprehensive data foundation involves integrating various services and capabilities - storage, processing, analysis, and data governance - to support diverse applications, including AI and ML. ??Strategic implementation requires a customer-focused, collaborative, and iterative approach, emphasising the importance of planning, execution, and continuous improvement.
