The USS IOWA deck restoration project continues to roll on at a brisk pace. The Herculan technicians (TMT Globally GmbH) flew in in last week. They applied the layers of Herculan deck underlayment and Teak-colored Herculan top coat then flew out within a week. This amazing collaboration of Teakdecking Systems and Herculan is producing amazing results. They even had some fun spelling TDS with the underlayment product. See photo. This well-greased machine is running efficiently only delayed by bouts of rainy weather. The long caulk seams are currently being grooved and caulk applied. The accuracy of these 70’+ runs are incredible and better than when the ship was new. The deck joinery abides by historical correctness even in the absence of the original decking material for reference. It’s a real pleasure working with these decking teams. We have created a new revolutionary method to create deck plugs in the Herculan synthetic Teak decking resulting in a more original Navy deck appearance. We call it the Sato Method. We are making history! Thank you Teakdecking Systems and Herculan for your fantastic support and efforts restoring one of the most historic naval vessels in US history. It's not often that we get to go back and see a 21,000 ft deck we installed, but the team is back on the legendary USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park to discuss a subject very close to our hearts - the importance of a good deck maintenance programme. A well maintained deck will last 20 to 25 years, and we have even been on boats where we installed the previous deck to discover they still had the original TDS SIS440 caulking we installed 20 years ago. The next phase of the new deck installation aboard the USS IOWA BATTLESHIP MEMORIAL, INC. continues. Our team working alongside the #Herculan crew, has been making steady progress. They have been leveling out dips in the 80 year old steel deck to prepare for the new deck install. Just getting all the material up to 01 level of the ship took 8 hours, highlighting the scale and complexity of working on a vessel of this size. Work continues, and we are all proud to contribute to the restoration of this historic battleship.
