Wait—wasn’t Foundations Training always part of TeachStart?
Absolutely!
But here’s the thing: we haven’t talked much about WHY we built it the way we did and HOW it gets Fellows ready for the classroom.
So let’s talk about it…
Once you start the TeachStart program to become a lead credentialed teacher, you’re required to attend a 5-day training called Foundations Training.
WHY did we create this required Foundations Training in the first place?
???Substitutes play a critical role that makes an impact on students, yet they often receive little to no training. We believe they should receive training before entering the classroom.
???Substitute teaching can be isolating. Self-administered training loses the collaboration that teachers need to grow in their journey, so we created a community-based learning environment.
HOW does Foundations Training turn Fellows into classroom-ready educators?
???While Fellows receive essential lessons in classroom management, we take the next step and have them collaborate with their peers through breakout rooms, feedback loops, and classroom scenario role-play.
?????Fellows are able to learn from one another, build a supportive community, and grow in their journey to becoming credentialed teachers.
???We invest time to create curriculum that equips educators with culturally responsive teaching mindsets and skills to create inclusive classrooms, regardless of race/ethnicity, culture, gender, language, and disability.
