Myth: Physical therapy can only help with pain? Fact: While low back pain is the most common condition to seek Physical Therapy services, physical therapists can treat a variety of conditions including orthopedic & neurological conditions, vertigo and pelvic floor dysfunctions to improve quality of life.?? ? ?It is a common belief that one should seek Physical Therapy services only when in pain . Physical Therapists can also incorporate mind-body holistic medicine practices to alleviate or manage your stress and pain to improve your quality of life. Can Acupressure tap into the nervous system? Here are some clinical pearls from Rachna Mehta, PT, DPT, CIMT, OCS, PRPC, RYT at TeachPhysio Can Acupressure be used to self-regulate our nervous system? The classic Acupuncture theory states that the disorder of visceral conditions and organs is reflected at specific points on the surface of the skin and these points are called Acu-points. Histological studies have found that Acu-points have: ● High density of nerve endings: A and C-afferent fibers. ● Higher concentration of neural and vascular elements- mast cells which perceive stimulation. Hence these Acupoints can easily be stimulated by manual pressure or Acupressure to tap into the peripheral nervous system which then connects to the central viscera . These points can be used daily as a wonderful neural self-regulation practice. #Mindfulness #Acupressure #IntegrativeHealthcare #PainRelief #SelfCare #PhysicalTherapy #StressManagement #PainManagement #HolisticRehabilitation #OccupationalTherapy #exercise

How can we practice mindfulness at work? Here is a wonderful exercise from Rachna Mehta, PT, DPT, CIMT, OCS, PRPC, RYT from TeachPhysio How can we improve mental clarity and focus to ensure that we take good decisions during our work day? The answer lies in having a calm relaxed state of mind and having good self-regulation skills. Short mindful exercises can be used at work to center onseself. Yintang (EXHN-3) is a powerful Acupuncture point that is known to have a mentally stabilizing influence in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is also a potent point for centering one's thoughts inwards and improving concentration. Here is a short mindful exercise you can do for 2 minutes using Acupressure at this point. 1. Sit quietly and close your eyes. 2. Relax your hand and fingers and use your middle finger to genttly press the area between your eyebrows, which is the Yintang Acupoint. 3. Engage in mindful breathing as you apply gentle pressure at the point. Focus on the quailty of your breath and notice how it flows with ease. Feel Gratitude for each breath that keeps your alive. 4. Gently focus on the Acupoint as you progressively feel more calm and relaxed. Repeat as needed. #Mindfulness #Acupressure #IntegrativeHealthcare #PainRelief #SelfCare #PhysicalTherapy #StressManagement #PainManagement #HolisticRehabilitation #OccupationalTherapy #exercise

Myth: Acupuncture points are different than Acupressure points? Fact: Acupressure uses gentle finger pressure instead of needles at Acupuncture points? Many people believe that Acupuncture points and Acupressure points are different. On the contrary, the same Acupoints are used for both Acupuncture and Acupressure. The only difference is that Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate the flow of Qi through the body’s energy meridians, while Acupressure uses gentle finger pressure on the same points. Many research studies have shown that Acupressure is a powerful clinical practice and can be practiced by skilled healthcare providers for holistic symptom management.
