What is Integrative Medicine? Here are some clinical pearls from Rachna Mehta, PT, DPT, CIMT, OCS, PRPC, RYT at TeachPhysio Integrative medicine takes a "whole ;person" approach. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) defines integrative health as bringing conventional health care approaches (medication, physical rehabilitation, psychotherapy, etc.) and complementary health approaches (acupuncture, yoga, probiotics, etc.) together with an emphasis on treating the whole person.? There is growing evidence and research that shows that mind-body practices such as Acupressure, mindfulness education, breathwork practices and Yoga can address the physical body and regulate the nervous system. These practices can bring a sense of calm, improve pain and combined with traditional physical therapy, can improve your overall function. ???????????????????????????????????? In both ancient and modern energy healing practices, the breath is the key to working with the physical, mental, emotional, and the energy body. Here is a simple breathing practice:? 1.????Sit comfortably & bring attention to your breath 2.????Focus on your inhale and exhale? 3.????Breathe in 4 seconds > hold 2 seconds > breathe out 4 seconds > hold 2 seconds. ( 4-2-4-2 ). Repeat 10 times????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????#IntegrativeMedicine #Mindfulness?#Acupressure #IntegrativeHealthcare #PainRelief #SelfCare #PhysicalTherapy #StressManagement #PainManagement #HolisticRehabilitation #OccupationalTherapy #exercise

Sleep is an important part of the human experience. It is essential for both our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Sleep deprivation may cause brain fog, fatigue and feelings of being overwhelmed and anxious. Here are a few things we can do: > Prioritize Self-Care > Exercise > Decrease or eliminate caffeine intake > Eat dinner early > Limit device usage before bed time > Practice mindful breathing several times during the day > Practice Acupressure for calming and nervous system regulation at bedtime along with positive affirmations Here is a short practice you can do using the Yintang Acupoint. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this point can help with memory, concentration and is a calming point for anxiety. At bedtime, close your eyes and gently press the Yintang Acupoint which is located at the center of the eyebrows. Take gentle breaths and say to yourself Relax > Release > Let Go . Gently breathe and repeat this, keeping your attention on your breath and feeling progressive relaxation throughout your body. Myth: Physical therapy can only help with pain? Fact: While low back pain is the most common condition to seek Physical Therapy services, physical therapists can treat a variety of conditions including orthopedic & neurological conditions, vertigo and pelvic floor dysfunctions to improve quality of life.?? ? ?It is a common belief that one should seek Physical Therapy services only when in pain . Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most prevalent chronic pain conditions in the United States and accounts for the majority of PT visits. However physical therapists are musculoskeletal specialists and movement experts and can partner with you to treat a variety of conditions including orthopedic & neurological conditions, balance and vertigo issues and a broad spectrum of pelvic floor dysfunctions including bowel and bladder issues to name a few. This treatment can help to improve mobility, delay or avoid surgery and even prevent future injuries or disability.? ? Physical Therapists can also incorporate mind-body holistic medicine practices to alleviate or manage your stress and pain to improve your quality of life. There are ten Physical Therapy certifications designated by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). Specialization allows therapists to become leaders and mentors within their respective fields. These specialties are:? 1. Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist (CCS) 2. Neurology Clinical Specialist (NCS) 3. Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) 4. Geriatric Clinical Specialist (GCS) 5. Pediatric Clinical Specialist (PCS) 6. Oncologic Clinical Specialist (OCS) 7.
