This post is scratch and sniff! You can smell the mint leaves, can’t you? Smell is a funny sense - it’s impossible to avoid triggering a scent in your mind when you see or hear certain familiar images or sounds, or the other way around - sometimes a scent retrieves a memory of a familiar person, place, or moment, taking you back there before you can even consciously think about it. Language, interestingly, is similar. If you can understand written English (or a narration of it), it’s impossible _not_ to understand this post. Try _not_ to understand when someone is speaking your language to you—you can’t, can you? It’s like trying not to smell mint when you look at this image. That’s why just learning facts _about_ a language doesn’t equal developing skills that help you understand and speak a language (or sign a signed language)—it’s like one of the five senses, and so different from learning content knowledge. Sure, you can learn grammar or spelling rules; you might even remember them when editing your writing and thinking about your word choice, phrasing, spelling, punctuation, etc. But it doesn’t substitute for actually _using_ the language. That’s why our language lessons—adaptable by any teacher of Spanish, French, or English as a second language to fit their curriculum—focus on learning the language by using it. Lesson Magic was created to supplement a curriculum by giving students support as they develop their language skills, while still corresponding to required topics.
