TLC at CUNY Graduate Center: Fostering Educators and Scholars
关于我们
The CUNY Graduate Center’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) creates and connects opportunities for GC students to grow as educators and scholars within the nation’s largest public urban university system. As one of the few teaching centers dedicated to working with graduate student instructors, the TLC prepares new college teachers for their entry into the classroom, guides developing teachers as they refine their practices, and helps experienced teachers think through how to best apply what they’ve learned in the next stages of their careers, whether those careers be inside or outside the classroom. The TLC’s programs are explicitly designed to generate, engage with, and integrate the concerns of the students whom it serves, and Graduate Center students take an active role in shaping the Center’s priorities and areas of focus. Unifying all TLC activities is a commitment to building and supporting community among educators teaching at CUNY.

How do museum visits shape student learning? ????? In the latest Visible Pedagogy post, Oriana Mejías Martínez explores how incorporating museum and gallery visits into a Spanish for Heritage Learners course at Hunter College enhances student engagement beyond the classroom. This post also highlights how educators can support students who may feel hesitant about museum spaces, ensuring accessibility and relevance in experiential learning. TLC alums doing amazing things…
Professor of Spanish and Linguistics Inés Va?ó García alongside six students published the first issue of “La FRAMilia” in time for the end of the Fall semester. This 12-page Spanish-language newspaper made its debut in the last weeks of the fall semester and was covered in the independent student newspaper The Gatepost. Please read all about it in the link in our bio! The article and photos as they appear in this post were written and taken by Ryan O’Connell, associate editor of The Gatepost. Here is a sneak peek at the article - “The students taking Business Communications in Spanish (SPAN 225) have spent the semester building - and learning to market - something more than theoretical - a 12-page issue of a Spanish-language newspaper they’ve all contributed to. Va?ó García has only been at Framingham State for one semester, but said she is already loving it. “I was lucky enough to have a really rewarding interdisciplinary experience during grad school, where I was able to complete a digital humanities certificate and rethink all my pedagogy through that certificate and my studies,” she said. Va?ó García said this led her to working with open pedagogy - the practice of helping students to create information, not just absorb it - experiential learning, and to rethink the projects students do and their purposes. “It seems to be the tendency that [knowledge learned from these projects] stays in the classroom where only other students and classmates have access to it,” she added. Marlee Griffin, a senior liberal studies major with a concentration in communication arts and English and Spanish minor, said working on the newspaper made her appreciate print news. “It’s really cool to have a physical copy of something to separate yourself from how everything is online these days,” she said. “Apps and headlines are made to grab your attention and keep your attention. … So it’s good to have something outside of that.””

? Academic Journaling Progress: Mentorship is a key part of academia, and I’m excited to share that I’ve been awarded a fellowship to mentor a student from CUNY Hostos Community College through the Hostos Research Center Scholars Program, in collaboration with the Teaching and Learning Center at the Graduate Center (The Graduate Center, City University of New York). This first-time initiative connects Graduate Center doctoral students with Hostos undergraduates, matching them based on their academic goals and research interests. The goal is to provide students with a strong research foundation, hands-on experience, and professional growth. The program culminates in a public presentation at the end of Spring 2025, fostering research skills, critical thinking, and academic development. Hopefully, this is just the beginning, with many more versions to come. Beyond supporting students, the program also provides resources for mentors, including training in time management, structured working groups, and peer discussions. This has been a great opportunity to connect with other PhD students from different fields Gewil Daniella Allas-spider venom, @Andreas- synthetic biochemistry, James- entropology.. etc.), learn about their research and mentoring experiences, and brainstorm strategies for guiding our mentees. This will be my first time supervising a student as a PhD researcher at Dr Mande Holford lab and I’m looking forward to working with Stherlie Cedoine, a first-year biology undergraduate. She’ll gain her first real lab experience, and who knows—maybe she’ll be inspired to pursue a future in scientific research. Beyond supporting her growth, this is also an opportunity for me to develop my mentoring skills. I look forward to working with Stherlie and building a lasting professional and personal connection. Excited about this journey ahead!
