The stat I took away from the AI Revolution in Education show - 27 seconds.
27 seconds is the average time any one student speaks out loud during a typical 55 minute class, according to Jamie Poskin, Founder and CEO of TeachFX.? It was a shockingly small number to me, and a crucial one, as there is a strong correlation between student talking and participation and academic performance.?
Jamie was on a panel at the AIR show, and talked through how his company’s offering helps teachers improve their teaching skills and their students’ outcomes through analyzing the audio recordings of the class.? All a teacher has to do is use their phone or laptop to record the audio, and TeachFX will analyze it and give the teacher a private report back that breaks down several items.? These include how often the teacher spoke vs. the students, the amount of questions vs. statements the teacher used, how long they waited after a question to speak, the grade level of their speech, and more.?
I thought it was an amazing application of AI in its utility and practicality.? There is no infrastructure required by the school or the district.? It is FERPA compliant.? No written permission needed from students or parents.? It is not used for teacher evaluation by the school, but is purely to create a feedback loop for the teacher to better understand their own delivery and improve over time.?
I left the show excited about TeachFX and the difference they are making to improve both teacher and student performance.? (And if I am honest, I thought about its application to various business meetings I have had to attend over the years.)
Thanks to ASU-GSV for putting on the AIR show, and I look forward to attending next year!
