#EdLoCNatCon2024 was one for the books. Thank you, Education Leaders of Color, for the opportunity to be in conversation with the brilliant Reyna Montoya (Aliento) and Gaby Pacheco (TheDream.US) about our duty as leaders in education to ensure that all students, regardless of immigration status, have access to educational and economic opportunity. We look forward to continuing these critical conversations beyond our session. It was wonderful to see so many familiar Teach For America alumni faces, to (re)connect with current and former colleagues in person, and to meet new folks. Erin Rackers, Tania Chairez, Barbara M. Logan Smith, PhD, Kaya Henderson, Lesly Gramajo, Jonathan Howard, MenSa Ankh Maa, Tai Dixon Darden, Esq., David Nungaray, Gary Briggs, Angelica Solis, Kelley King, Ed.S. ACC, Tori Vasquez De La Paz, Stephanie Parra, M.Ed. Riyaz Gayasaddin, Lisa L., and so many others. As I wait to board my flight home, I am sitting with immense gratitude for the space, the time, the community, and a few important reflections/reminders. Stay proximate. It is critical that we actively participate and engage in the communities we live and work in. Choose courage. Ask and re-ask the tough questions that can lead to our systems, our policies, and our practices to better serve young people…and ourselves. It will take all of us. Multi-racial, multi-generational coalitions will continue to play a key role in advancing educational equity in this country. Join us. Until next time. #WeAreEdLoC

Education Leaders of Color was a vibe. It was like a collective community hug (literally, at one point, when I got the world's best, extended hug from Kaya Henderson). The entire experience was one big "I see you. Keep going." There were many highlights, but my main one was collaborating with?Sonia C. Park,?Naomi N. Shelton?Rena Johnson,?and?Dr. Adele Tay Fabrikant to convene education leadership development EDs in one space and charter school leaders in another. All in the spirit of being so much stronger together. Scarcity is a myth, and our kids deserve any opportunity we can give them to experience transformational leaders who stay and drive impact- no matter what org makes that happen. Even better if it's two or more working smarter together- shout out to our friends Greenhouse E3 and Education Forward DC for supporting our collaborative pipeline work here in DC. Also our collaborations with Teach For America to support leaders in DC, Virginia and the Delta. On a more vulnerable note (you know I always have to go there), I did a scary thing and shared the work of School Leader Lab in front of two crowds of people I deeply admire. I called a friend saying that I was tired of doing scary ish right before and then I did it anyway. #growth. #doitscared #leadershipdevelopment #strongertogether #vulnerability

Cait Leavey (Bay Area ’13) has dedicated her life to public service in honor of her father, Lt. Joseph Leavey, who died while responding to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Through her work as an educator and mental health counselor, Cait has transformed her grief into a commitment to helping others, especially the families of first responders.
