Today, we partnered with Cultivando for our community engagement bike tour, visiting Greyhound Grounds Coffee House. Throughout the day, we learned about the challenges grassroots organizations face navigating government funding, the mental health experiences of Latino/a parents, and more. We also discussed ways to collaborate, ensuring our support reflects the communities' needs and desires. The Denver Foundation's Strengthening Neighborhoods program awarded its first grant 27 years ago to Cultivando, then known as Commerce City Community Enterprise (CCCE). We’re grateful for this enduring partnership and the impact Cultivando continues to create. Thanks Javier Alberto Soto, Dr. Janet Lopez, Benjamin Perry, Jennifer Larsen, Tanner Edwards, Lindsay Nason, Gabriela Severino, Trenyese Shields, Russ Shaw - MNM, and the Cultivando team for touring around with us, and everyone who was a part of making this event happen.?
关于我们
The mission of The Denver Foundation is to inspire people and mobilize resources to strengthen our community. The Denver Foundation is the product of 90 years of generous donors, hard working volunteers, and visionary grantees. In November 1925, community leaders came together to create an endowment to serve the future needs of Metro Denver. They recognized that community needs are always changing, and they wanted to give succeeding generations some resources to help meet future needs. Today it manages assets of more than $800 million; received $ 67 million in gifts last year (2015 not audited); and holds more than 1000 funds to date.

Yesterday, Mara Vanderslice Kelly, our senior director of engaged philanthropy, spoke on the B:CIVIC panel, "Redefining Corporate Impact: Leading with Responsibility." She shared insights into how community foundations can help businesses with their corporate social responsibility (CSR). We’re grateful to have been part of this conversation with CoCo McCarty Criste and Karla Rodriguez. We discussed some of the challenges in CSR, strategic approaches to identifying impact areas, and how businesses can responsibly support communities and employees across industries. Thanks Pete Dignan for moderating, and the entire team at B:CIVIC for hosting the event. We are grateful to have?Rachel Spory-Leek, CSPG,?and her incredible expertise on our team. These meetings are a great opportunity for financial planners, wealth managers, and others to learn about trends (this one related to closely held business interests) and connect with each other.
At last week's meeting of The Denver Foundation's Professional Advisors’ Council meeting, I had the privilege to present with Chris J. Anderson, CPA, ABV, ASA, on the need for appropriate valuation when clients wish to donate interests in a closely held business. Because the IRS requires charitable donations to be substantiated by a ‘qualified appraisal,’ not just any appraisal will do, and using the wrong appraisal can lead to significant unintended tax consequences for donors and, in some cases, appraisers. Closely held business interests can be a significant source of philanthropic capital, but these gifts are complex, requiring significant time and the careful coordination of a team of professional advisors to ensure everything runs smoothly. To successfully close gifts of this nature, professional advisors should regularly talk with clients about their philanthropic goals, especially in the succession planning conversations that precede putting the company on the market. The sooner philanthropic advisors are brought into the conversation, the more likely it will be that the gift can be completed in a way that benefits the nonprofit and the donor.? Last week, Adelita Aguirre and Melissa Rosscup from our Scholarships team shared with a group of Aurora leaders how to navigate college funding resources for themselves, and for their children. This community-led group, La Universidad para Todos, is part of our Strengthening Neighborhoods program. This program provides small grants to support grassroots community development and organizing. Aligning our team’s different areas of expertise through engagements like these is one of the many ways we support our community's needs.
