Long Hours are Normal – A 10-hour day? That’s standard. Finally closing your laptop at 11pm? Also normal. The truth is, you get out of it what you put in. ? Trial & Error is Inevitable – Unless you’re working with a coach or consultant, you’ll face some bumps. Don’t be afraid to fail twice if it means succeeding four times. ?? Balance is Critical – Juggling business development, sourcing candidates, and filling roles all in the same week isn’t easy. Automation, personalization, and efficiency will be your best friends. ?? Referrals are a Game Changer – Whether from previous clients, candidates you placed, or even your neighbor 2 houses down the street — referrals can unlock huge opportunities. Network relentlessly! ?? Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help – Explore partnerships, listen to cold outreach, seek advice, and find a mentor. You don’t have to (and shouldn’t) do everything alone. ? Patience is Everything – Success doesn’t happen overnight. I've had great years, good years, and tough years — but I never gave up. One phone call. One email. One meeting. One client. One placement. Full Transparency: Not Every Client is a Good Client — and That's Okay. When I first started my recruiting agency over five years ago, I was eager to take on any client that came my way. After all, business is business, right? Well... not exactly. One of my earliest clients had a slow hiring process, offered low salaries with no benefits, and had poor follow-up with candidates and me. Yet, I kept working with them because, hey — they were a client. Fast forward two years, they asked me to revisit a role I had previously sourced for. While searching, I found a candidate I’d spoken to before — someone who had been rejected for that very role. Except now, they were working for the client. Thinking I must be mistaken, I checked my emails — and sure enough, that candidate had been rejected without explanation. (Silly me for not setting clear expectations upfront about requiring rejection feedback for every candidate!) I professionally reached out to the hiring manager — twice — to address the situation. No response to the issue but a week later, they asked me for more candidates. I didn’t reply and haven’t since. That might seem cold to you or even unprofessional BUT I value my time and efforts way more than I value a dishonorable client. Now, this has happened to me twice in my career. The second time, the client (a well-known company) owned their mistake and made things right. Here’s my message to recruiters starting their own firms: Set your expectations from the beginning. Don’t be afraid to say no to clients who can’t respect your process or your candidates. Every client isn’t a good client — and that’s perfectly fine.
