This #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrate three extraordinary women whose impact continues to shape the legal profession: Arabella Mansfield – The first woman admitted to the bar in the U.S. in 1869, challenging gender restrictions and setting a precedent for women in law. Constance Baker Motley – A civil rights leader, the first Black woman appointed to the federal judiciary, and a key legal strategist in cases that dismantled segregation. Justice Sonia Sotomayor – The first Latina Supreme Court Justice, whose career has been dedicated to advocating for justice, diversity, and equal rights. In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Macon Bolling Allen, a trailblazer in American law. As one of the first Black lawyers in the U.S. and the nation’s first Black judge, Allen overcame immense barriers to pave the way for future generations. Born free in Indiana, he taught himself to read and write before becoming a schoolteacher. In the 1840s, he moved to Maine to study law, passing the bar exam in 1844. Facing racial discrimination, he later moved to Boston, where he co-founded the first Black law office in the U.S. and became a Justice of the Peace in 1848. After the Civil War, he continued his legal career in South Carolina and Washington, D.C., practicing law until his passing in 1894. His legacy is a testament to resilience and progress.
