(TDMF?), which allows structural engineers to easily incorporate fluid dampers into the design of new buildings in earthquake zones. ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) is the industry leader in performing technical evaluations of building products, materials, and systems for code compliance. The procedure has been evaluated by ICC-ES through the rigorous AC494 procedure, including validation with over 100 archetype structures using the FEMA P-695 methodology.   • Exciting developments in tall building design! Damped outriggers enhance structural performance by replacing traditional stiff connections with Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVDs). Unlike conventional methods that simply increase stiffness, FVDs dissipate energy and significantly reduce overturning moments and floor accelerations.   • The “Inventory of Non-ductile Concrete Buildings in High Seismic Risk Areas of California” identifies 40,000 Non-ductile Concrete Buildings in the state. These buildings are schools, apartments, hospitals and office buildings. Built prior to the 1976 Uniform Building Code, these buildings have limited or poorly designed reinforcing steel that make them particularly vulnerable to significant damage or collapse. For this reason, several cities have enacted ordinances to enhance the seismic safety of NDC buildings. Los Angeles has a Non-Ductile Concrete (NDC) Retrofit Program requiring owners of these buildings to evaluate and retrofit their structures if needed. Santa Monica and West Hollywood have similar requirements. Other major cities like San Francisco are in the process of enacting ordinances. Adding supplemental damping with Fluid Viscous Dampers can effectively protect NDC building columns from damage or sudden failure. Unlike many other retrofit options, dampers have flexibility in placement and, adding dampers typically avoids foundation work.   • Should you consider FVDs on your next seismic retrofit? This 28-story Pre-Northridge Moment Frame structure in downtown Oakland was voluntarily upgraded with dampers distributed up most of the height. Damper sizes were limited to avoid axial loads that would require upgrades to existing columns and foundations. As a result of adding dampers, no beam-column joints, columns or footings had to be strengthened to meet the performance objectives. For retrofits of buildings like 300 Lakeside, dampers provide an ideal solution where the building period is unchanged which avoids the expensive and invasive foundation work that often accompanies solutions that add stiffness to the existing structure.

  • Did you know that fluid viscous dampers can minimize the effects of twisting in irregular or torsionally susceptible buildings? Strategically placed FVDs opposite the center of rotation can reduce large corner displacements by 50% or more. Employing dampers to address torsional behavior avoids stiffening buildings which attracts more load and typically includes foundation work. Dampers provide an elegant way to solve this difficult challenge.
