Matthew Kuhn is the Founder & CEO of Taurus Vascular, a Houston-based medical device company dedicated to improving long-term outcomes for patients with aortic aneurysms. Under Matthew’s leadership, Taurus Vascular is developing an innovative medical device to reduce the risk and impact of endoleaks after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). Matthew holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Delaware and a Master's in Bioengineering from Rice University. He is an accomplished inventor with over 50 US and international patent applications in various clinical specialties, including surgical oncology, laparoscopic surgery, and cardiovascular electrophysiology. At Taurus Vascular, we're on a mission to improve the lives of patients with aortic aneurysms. Every year, around 1 million people worldwide are diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) - a condition where a part of the aorta, the largest artery in the body, becomes enlarged or balloons outward. This happens because the wall of the aorta can weaken due to a variety of factors, including age, smoking, and genetics. If the aneurysm gets too large, it can burst, causing serious internal bleeding, which is often life-threatening. Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) is a pioneering procedure that has revolutionized the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms, however, it has also introduced some challenges. Unfortunately, up to 50% of patients treated via EVAR experience a complication called an “endoleak” - the leakage of blood into the aneurysm sac - resulting in ongoing aneurysm expansion and a continued risk of rupture. Despite the high frequency and seriousness of this complication, endoleaks have remained an urgent unmet clinical need for over two decades. Founded in 2023 from the Texas Medical Center Innovation Biodesign Program, Taurus Vascular is developing a novel catheter-based technology to address endoleaks. Our device creates a shunt to continuously drain endoleaks from the high-pressure aneurysm sac into the low-pressure venous system, promoting accelerated aneurysm shrinkage after endovascular aneurysm repair. Our journey has been filled with milestones like winning 1st Place at both the OPEN Houston Business Pitch Competition and the Texas A&M New Ventures Competition, acceptance into MedTech Innovator, being named one of the Top 10 Most Promising Life Science Companies at the BioHouston Texas Life Science Forum, and participating in several programs such as the University City Science Center Capital Readiness Program and accelerators including MassChallenge, OwlSpark, Octane OC, and LaunchPad SBDC. What a day! Congratulations to some of our TMC Biodesign companies who took home a few wins from Texas A&M New Ventures Competition. ? Taurus Vascular was selected as the First Place Finalist, securing $30,000, and received the Biotex Services Prize. ? Kudos to Ember Sleep for not only earning the Stibbs & Co. Legal Service Prize and the Winners’ Circle Legacy Prize but also coming in second place in the Elevator Pitch category, taking home $4,000. ? Congratulations to ParaDocs Health for winning the Capital Factory Investment & Services Prize and the Invincible Spaces Prize.
