One of the hardest parts of our job as innovation and grant consultants is turning down great businesses. For every 10 businesses that approach us for funding support, we’ll go on to partner with just one or two. Not because the others aren’t brilliant, but because not every great business is a?grant-fundable?business.?And it’s important to know the difference. ???? ???????????? ????????????????????, ????’???? ???????????? ???????????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????? ?? ??????????????’?? ?????????????? ???? ??????????????. But telling a prospective client that their chances are slim can sometimes feel like we’re dismissing their business idea altogether.?That couldn’t be further from the truth.?Some of the most successful businesses in history wouldn’t have been eligible for grant funding, and that doesn’t make them any less viable or investable. It’s simply that?what makes a business?successful?and?what makes a grant application successful?don’t always align. A business that doesn’t fit a grantor’s criteria can still thrive and become an industry leader. Grants are designed to support specific types of innovation and stages of development. The CAM-EV project, a collaboration between Altilium Clean Technology and Imperial College London, has developed a novel method of hydrometallurgy to recover the material needed to produce a high-quality cathode-active material (CAM). CAM-EV managed to recover 97% of the lithium found in the cathodes in lithium ion phosphate (LFP) cells. The new hydrometallurgical process – unlike traditional pyrometallurgical processes, which incinerate materials - was also found to recover substantial amounts of graphite, which is used in the manufacturing of anodes. A single year’s global supply of EV batteries could produce?3.5 million tonnes of waste. Methods like CAM-EV’s are needed to recycle the critical metals inside this waste back into new battery cells.? Altilium completes maiden JORC resource for its ACT 3 European integrated critical minerals recycling project. ? ?? Altilium is pleased to announce the completion of a Maiden JORC Mineral Resource Estimate for its Medet mineral recovery and recycling project (ACT 3), an innovative waste-to-value facility focused on developing a sustainable European supply chain for copper and other critical minerals. ? ???? Located in Bulgaria, the integrated critical minerals recycling project includes a 2,200-hectare copper tailings site, one of the largest resources of copper mine waste in Eastern Europe, as well as a brownfield SX-EW Plant which is being retrofitted to recycle old EV batteries and production scrap. The combined operations will provide a one-stop-shop for critical minerals in the European region, including copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt. ?? The Maiden JORC Resource is a key component of Altilium’s current scoping study for the tailings project, allowing informed decisions for investment in the planned recycling facility. The vast site of the Medet tailings contains approximately 110 million metric tonnes of waste material. Altilium plans to recover copper and other minerals from the tailings, using its proprietary hydrometallurgical process, transforming what was once considered waste into a critical resource for Europe’s future battery industry. ?? By recovering copper from tailings, the project will help to meet this growing demand while minimising the need for hard rock mining operations. Recycling also provides a quicker route to market than developing new copper mines, which can take decades from discovery to production. ?? Altilium’s planned recycling operations for EV batteries and mine tailings in the UK and Europe will provide enough copper for production of over 596,500 new EV batteries a year – enough to fuel 33% of Tesla’s entire fleet of EVs delivered in 2023. ?? By transforming waste such as mine tailings and old batteries into valuable resources, Altilium is developing a sustainable supply chain for low carbon battery materials, helping to deliver energy security and industrial resilience for the UK and Europe. #copper #mining #sustainability #lithiumion #circulareconomy #greentech
