Our Director, Maria Balshaw, recently joined cultural leaders from across the country?in welcoming the Culture Secretary’s announcement of the Arts Everywhere Fund. Maria shared; 'Today's funding announcements are fantastic news for the whole museum sector. We are incredibly grateful to see the Government’s recognition of the importance of our world-class museums. The increase in budgets for national museums and galleries like my own organisation Tate will be vital in supporting our financial resilience, enabling us to continue caring for and providing access to the national collection and the incredible public benefit we deliver. We also warmly welcome the announcement of additional capital investment for national and regional museums through the Public Bodies Infrastructure Fund and the Museum Estate and Development Fund. We’re excited to share that Mikei Hall, Senior Art Handling Technician at Tate Britain, has been nominated for the inaugural Sky Arts Hero Award. To celebrate, we’re throwing back to when Mikei took us on a tour of Hew Locke’s incredible installation, The Procession. ? Alex Farquharson, Director of Tate Britain, shared a few words, ‘All of you who know Mikei will attest that he is a very worthy nominee for this award, which aims to recognise some of the many people who work behind-the-scenes across the arts, and who are absolutely integral to the success of their organisations and the wider sector. Mikei has played a hugely important role in producing countless significant exhibitions and ambitious commissions at Tate Britain over more than 30 years, working closely with artists and curators to support the realisation of their visions. His contribution to Tate and the wider sector has also been invaluable in many other ways, not least through his passion and dedication to mentoring and supporting people of colour, including his role as one of the co-chairs of Tate’s BAME Network.’ ? Mikei has himself commented, with characteristic generosity, ‘To me, this nomination represents not just my work, but the efforts of many behind the scenes who often go unrecognised. It’s about acknowledging the value of every role in the arts, from the technicians to the volunteers. My journey, coming from a humble background and facing barriers in the arts, now feels like it might inspire others who see that their contributions matter. This award is a step towards breaking down barriers and showing that everyone, regardless of their background, can make a meaningful impact in the arts.’ ? Sky Arts invited the arts community to nominate their unsung heroes for this new award earlier this summer. They have now revealed the five nominees, with the winner to be announced at a ceremony at the Roundhouse on 17 September, which will air on Sky Arts and Freeview. ? To mark Andy Warhol’s birthday today we’re showing off the work of our Conservators and Scientists cleaning one of Tate's most popular artworks, Warhol's Marilyn Diptych! Over the last two years they have undertaken a meticulous cleaning process to restore the artwork's vibrant colours whilst preserving all of Warhol's original touches, getting the piece ready to go back on public display. In August 1962, the same month that Warhol began experimenting with silkscreen techniques, Marilyn Monroe tragically passed away. Between August and December of that year, Warhol created at least twenty-three paintings of Monroe using his newfound silkscreen method. All of these works were based on the same photograph: a 20th Century Fox publicity still for the 1953 film 'Niagara', taken by Gene Kornman. These pieces varied in their execution, with some rendered in colour and others in black and white. One of the most renowned works from this series, 'Marilyn Diptych', has become a cornerstone of Tate's collection since its acquisition in 1980. Tate is pleased to acknowledge that some of the equipment used to support this conservation treatment was generously supported by an UK Research and Innovation Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Capability for Collections (CapCo) Fund award 2020-2022

We're excited to share that Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920 is open now at Tate Britain! ?? ?? Featuring artists from Tudor times to the First World War, this show dismantles stereotypes surrounding women artists in history. It tells the stories of the women who championed access to art training and broke boundaries with commercial careers, daringly painting what were usually seen as subjects for male artists: history pieces, battle scenes and the nude. Now You See Us features over 150 works from artists including Artemisia Gentileschi, Mary Beale and Angelica Kauffman, and brings to light the story of women artists in Britain over 400 years.
