The FAST world needs to talk a lot more about, and take some cues from, YouTube. For the first two decades of my career, I obsessed over YouTube's search & discovery algorithm, babysitting newly published videos in their first few hours and tweaking thumbnails and metadata to squeeze as much performance out of them as possible. One of the defining aspects of the viewer experience on YouTube is it's endlessly dynamic. Constant surprise & delight. Recency of upload has always been a key input to the S&D algorithm, and anyone who has run a YT channel knows that if you can get your most engaged audience to watch a video in the first few hours after upload, you give that video the best chance to be exposed to a broader audience. YouTube is the biggest competitor to every TV-centric platform. It's also the reference point for how most people (especially young people) watch on their TVs. Per Nielsen, if a viewer is not watching broadcast or cable, they are most likely watching YouTube. If we want to capture cultural conversation (not just viewership) and make FAST platforms more relevant to customers, they must be as dynamic as YouTube is. Static libraries updated quarterly with already-exposed studio content are great, but they generally drive long-tail viewership - individual videos/series get decent viewership, but very few break out. I'm back from a longgggg overdue vacation with my husband - it was our first ?child-free? trip since having our daughter in 2020! While I was chowing down on pizza in Palermo, my team at Tastemade was killing it in SoCal during our Pizza Week extravaganza! We sent out custom pizza boxes to partners, talent, and influencers, that were packed with goodies like a pizza-scented candle, programming details, a pizza slicer, checkered socks, a hair claw clip, and of course, an Uber Eats gift card to enjoy a slice on us! ???? We also co-hosted two pizza making classes with the iconic L'ANTICA PIZZERIA DA MICHELE S.R.L. at their Hollywood location, and created a special collaborative menu for Pizza Week. We gave all attendees Tastemade-branded aprons. So proud of the work we were able to do, and can't wait to see (and eat) what's next!
