Yesterday we had the honor of hosting City of Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool and Economic Development Officer Luke Bonner for a TARUS facility tour. It’s great to have city leadership that understands and supports economic growth! We brought them up to speed with our latest developments, like our new Gundrill/Deep Hole drilling machine we’re building for customers in the #nuclear industry. There’s a big push in #nuclearenergy right now, and these goals cannot be accomplished without companies that provide #tooling for nuclear #powergeneration. These contracts include nuclear reactor component manufacturing and material procurement activities for Columbia and Virginia class submarines as well as Ford class aircraft carriers and production and delivery of fuel and support activities for the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. #FunFactFriday TARUS innovated an industry first capability in multi-spindle gundrill machines. Tubesheets in a #nuclear power station steam generator have up to 30,000 precision holes drilled by a gundrilling machine. Drilling hole patterns is extremely complex. Drills need to be installed and removed depending on the hole pattern which is an arduous, labor-intensive process. TARUS introduced the DHMS 5-spindle BTA deephole drilling machine which is able to have drills used together or separately in any combination at any time controlled by the #CNC, which was a first in the industry. The drill feeds and bushing nose pieces are independently driven and controlled by the CNC and can be programmed to be used in any combination for any cycle.?For example, all five spindles can run for one cycle, and the very next cycle can extend any chosen nose piece and drills. To make this function even more useful, TARUS developed sophisticated tool life management system to keep track of when a drill was changed and when it is due to be changed again even if the use of the spindles is not uniform and also in the event that a drill was changed out of cycle due to wear or damage.
