Today, TCSO and Sheriff Waybourn honor National Medal of Honor Day, recognizing the brave men and women who have received our nation’s highest military decoration. Since its inception in 1863, 3,528 individuals have been awarded the Medal of Honor, with only 61 still living today. In tribute to their courage and sacrifice, the National Medal of Honor Museum opened today in the City of Arlington. More than just a collection of artifacts, the museum celebrates the heroic actions of American veterans who went above and beyond in service to their fellow man and country.

On Friday, Sheriff Waybourn participated in a motivational leadership panel at the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration, a division of The Center for American and International Law. Joining him were Dallas County Sheriff Brown and Collin County Sheriff Skinner. Together, they shared valuable insights from their law enforcement careers, discussing the inspirations that drive them, key lessons learned during their time in office, and strategies for overcoming the challenges of leadership. The panel engaged with 30 law enforcement leaders enrolled in the 64th School of Executive Leadership,?representing regions across Texas, Maryland, and Florida.

The Texas Department of Public Safety contacted our Tarrant Regional Auto Crimes Task Force (TRACTF) regarding the possible whereabouts of a stolen vehicle in rural Wise County. Our team responded to the location, secured a search warrant, inspected 66 vehicles on the property, and recovered six stolen vehicles taken in Texas and Oklahoma (estimated recovery value of $73K). Wise County is one of seven counties in the task force's program area (Tarrant, Parker, Hood, Jack, Palo Pinto, and Somervell). The Wise County Sheriff’s Office is a proud participating partner, with a full-time assigned investigator, that assists in our regional approach of combatting vehicle theft, vehicle burglary, and fraud-related auto crimes.

Did you know TCSO has its own tiny farm? Our staff at Labor Detail do everything from tilling the soil to planting seeds and harvesting crops. And what happens to the food? We donate it to local food banks. Over the last several years, we've donated up to 18,000 pounds of fresh produce annually! Now, with our new, slightly larger tractor, the mission can continue!

LEEP has a new, four-legged deputy! Meet Jester! He is a 1.5-year-old Border Collie from Diamond J Stock Dogs in Granbury, Texas. Fun Fact: he is the son of LEEP’s first cow dog, Dpt. Maverick. He is also named after a pilot from the movie Top Gun, just like his dad! He will partner with Maverick & Dpt. Dalton to capture livestock. The father-son duo will work together to move livestock out of the brush so LEEP deputies can access them more easily.

TCSO offers year-round continuing education courses for employees. Last week’s program featured a 40-hour class on firearm fundamentals and was available to corrections officers within our agency who want to become a weapon-certified officer. Topics covered include penal code, case laws, firearms maintenance, fundamentals that push students to make 50-yard hits on steel, and scenarios such as shooting in low-light or dark environments. Thanks to Dpt. Nelson and Lt. Martinez amongst others for organizing the training and congrats to those who earned their certification!
