Today, we celebrate the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. Abortion Provider Appreciation Day began after Dr. David Gunn was murdered by a white supremacist and anti-abortion extremist in 1993. This was the first documented killing of an OBGYN by someone with the intent of stopping that doctor from providing abortion care. This act of violence encouraged other anti-abortion extremists and the United States saw an increase in anti-abortion related violence. In response, Congress passed the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act in 1994, which enacts civil and criminal penalties to those who attempt to use physical obstruction or force to impede citizens' access to abortion care. In 1996, March 10th became recognized as the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers.
This day is now meant to thank, honor, and celebrate those who provide life-saving healthcare to people seeking abortions. Especially in the current political and social landscape, it is vital to provide safe, non-judgmental, and accessible abortion care to all.
