This post kicks off #TangoBeltTuesday, our new weekly series where we’ll share insights about our mission, technology, and the impact we’re making. Follow along every Tuesday as we reintroduce the Tango Belt, our team, and our commitment to mobility and fall-injury mitigation.
Tango Belt exists to redefine fall protection for older adults, a vision sparked by Dr. Robert Buckman, a trauma surgeon who saw firsthand the devastating impact of hip fractures. Determined to find a better way, he pioneered the development of a smart belt that could detect falls and deploy an airbag in milliseconds to reduce injury.
Over a decade later, Dr. Buckman’s vision remains as vital as ever. What began as a groundbreaking idea has evolved into a clinically validated solution, supported by research and real-world testing. Falls continue to be the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older, with over 14 million—approximately one in four—experiencing a fall each year. Even more alarming, the age-adjusted fall death rate has risen by 41%, from 55.3 per 100,000 older adults in 2012 to 78.0 per 100,000 in 2021 (CDC). The need for innovative fall protection has never been greater.
With hip fractures leading to significant loss of mobility and independence, the need for fall protection has never been more urgent. Today, we carry forward Dr. Buckman’s legacy, bringing Tango Belt to market to protect lives and enhance mobility—because every second matters in fall protection.
