On our latest episode of the Tangent ?? Proptech podcast, I was reminded that greatness often comes in unexpected packages. Edward Cohen and I spoke to Amit Gupta of Aeroseal and as we were getting started, as much as I liked Amit, his demeanor didn't reflect what I (stereo)typically associate with allstar founders. (Link to episode in comments.) Turns out Aeroseal is a leader in cleantech, revolutionizing building efficiency through patented sealing technologies. And under Amit's leadership, Aeroseal has secured nearly $100 million in private equity funding, sealed 300,000 homes, enhanced performance in 500mm+ square feet of commercial properties, and expanded to 90+ countries with a 1,500+ dealer network. Additionally, Aeroseal’s innovations help reduce HVAC losses and aim to eliminate one gigaton of CO? emissions annually, accelerating the net-zero building movement worldwide. Amit reminded me that sometimes beneath quiet demeanors are absolute rockstars with the talent, dedication, and innovative ideas to propel companies to excellence. The world of atoms is less flexible than the world of bits. ?? Building software for purely digital use cases has gotten easier over time. The combination of low code / no code solutions and AI “helpers” means that even an econ major like me can spin up a simple functional app in the course of a week. ?? Once created, software for digital use cases can be replicated with near zero marginal cost, creating near infinite leverage for long term winners with durable moats. Unsurprisingly, low barriers to entry and near infinite leverage is also a recipe for fierce competition. ?? Building digital tools for businesses that transact in physical spaces is more difficult. By definition, these businesses are subject to the limits of time and space in ways that the purely digital world is not. As a consequence, building digital tools for managing physical spaces requires deep empathy for both end customers and staff. Competition is likely less fierce because of the challenges presented by the physical world and the need for deep domain expertise.
