  • If you're an advisor, what are you doing to address the changing tide of rising gen engagement? Jennifer East's thoughts below capture many of the trends we see with the families that we support. We especially see impact when it comes to empowering the rising generation to work productively with advisors. The days of sitting back and "being taken care" of are out, and we see young adults taking charge of their relationships and making moves to drive their wealth rather than letting it own them.

A conversation with a colleague recently made me pause and reflect on how the family enterprise and family wealth space has evolved, particularly when it comes to the rising generation. When I started working in this area nearly 20 years ago, next-gen development wasn’t the industry focus it is today. For me, it was always a natural and essential part of supporting enterprising families. Looking back, it’s clear how much the landscape has evolved—both in the way families approach next-gen engagement and how the industry has responded. Here are some of the biggest shifts I’ve observed over the years: ?? "Rising, not next" – Many rising gen leaders push back on the term "next-gen" because they are already decision-makers and influencers in their families and businesses. ?? Opportunities to work with advisors who understand their world – In the past, rising gens had little choice but to work with the advisors their parents selected. Today, they increasingly seek out professionals who share their lived experience—advisors who also come from family enterprise backgrounds or understand the nuances of growing up in a wealthy family. The ability to work with “people like them” fosters trust, relatability, and deeper engagement. ?? The rise of peer networks – Twenty years ago, structured peer groups for rising gen family members were rare. Today, organisations have emerged to provide safe spaces for next-gen leaders to learn, connect, and challenge each other. ?? More educational pathways – From financial boot camps to leadership accelerators, there are now more structured programs for next-gens. But this presents a new challenge—development is not a one-time event. Ongoing education and exposure to real-life governance and leadership matter just as much. ?? A broader definition of success – For many rising gens, success isn’t just about taking over the family business. More next-gens are forging independent careers, leading impact-driven initiatives, or rethinking their role in wealth stewardship beyond traditional leadership paths. ?? Wealth as wellbeing – A growing number of families are redefining wealth beyond financial capital. Rising gens increasingly see wealth as a means to support personal fulfilment, family harmony, mental health, and social contribution, rather than just a financial inheritance to be managed. ?? From secrecy to transparency – Families are increasingly recognising that withholding information until "the right time" often creates more problems than it solves. There’s now more openness around wealth, governance, and succession planning—although it’s still a work in progress. I’d love to hear from others: What trends have you noticed in the way families engage and prepare the rising generation? #FamilyEnterprise #NextGenLeadership #RisingGen #WealthStewardship #FamilyGovernance #NextGenDevelopment #GenerationalWealth #WealthAsWellbeing

"The simple reality is... the world is not the same as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago, and it's never going to go back. We're not going to the good old days. You just simply need to think through these things, do the right audits, create a playbook so that you know if and when something bad happens, you're prepared." Our friends at Tamarind Learning recently hosted Global Guardian CEO Dale Buckner on their podcast to explore the evolving global threat landscape and how family offices can better protect themselves. In the interview with Kirby Rosplock, PhD, Dale discussed practical steps to enhance security preparedness—covering physical safety, cyber risks, and the importance of having a comprehensive response plan.
