To educate and bring awareness to AAC, here are some things you should keep in mind when communicating with an AAC user. 1) When speaking with them, address the AAC user directly. 2) Show visual cues of engagement in the conversation (e.g. eye contact). 3) Speak naturally (you do not need to speak louder or slower). 4) Treat adults as adults--do not infanitilze AAC users. 5) Respect their space and equipment--do not touch it without permission and remember it is a necessary accessibility tool. 6) Allow time for the user to complete their thoughts and don't interrupt. People with autism or cognitive conditions can be at risk for elopement or wandering due to a variety of factors. Elopement, or running away from a safe area, and wandering often stem from a combination of impulsivity and intense interests. Project Lifesaver is a non-profit organization whose aim is to prevent wandering and to reunite those who have wandered with their loved ones. Emergency responders and law enforcement are provided with the awareness and technology to help these individuals.
