Deidra says it all. Our community is incredible on so many levels. We are incredibly grateful to support in any way we're able.
Today's update: First, in the off chance that you're a skilled outdoor, adventure, leadership, and/or clinical facilitator and also checking LinkedIn right now for some reason and want to be out in communities providing support for youth, please fill out this form: https://lnkd.in/e39CU_rf Now, the story telling: working in the outdoor industry for over a decade now, specifically on the programming side of things, has often come with that sense of being the misunderstood and sometimes underappreciated department (in campus rec, in nonprofits, etc). What I'm seeing here in Western NC/Eastern TN/across Appalachia is the outdoor ed folks showing WAY up. Putting those leadership skills into action. I'm excited to be working with PIVOTPoint WNC and Talisman Summer Camp, coordinating to get therapeutic emotional support and processing programming to kids in affected areas. I've also seen Waypoint Adventure offering up their adaptive equipment to help evac/transport folks, WILDERNESS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE), and The Association for Experiential Education members showing up for their communities, Wilderness Medical Associates International, NOLS Wilderness Medicine and other certified folks putting their Wilderness First Aid/First Responder/EMT skills to good use. French Broad Adventures raft guides going out on swiftwater rescues with local fire departments. Backpackers hiking in to do supply drops and welfare checks. And this is just what I'm seeing from my vantage point, which is admittedly limited. I often joke that while I don't take myself seriously, I take the work that I do seriously. It is a lot of fun, it is also so needed and so valuable and SO critical in ways that I don't think people often understand. This region is an area that is built on outdoor recreation, and when outdoor professionals are needed, we show up. This is what outdoor leadership looks like. This is what leadership in general looks like. We don't just have fun, we're skilled and we care. (really cool picture courtesy of FBA staff) #HurricaneHelene #AppalachiaStrong #OutdoorLeadership
