You don’t need to do the work for your employees. You need to create an enviornement that allows your team to succeed. If you find yourself micro-managing or dropping down to do an unsustainable amount of work yourself to ensure good outcomes… Step back and think about what you can do to improve the conditions your team is operating inside of. You may identify changes that benefit not just one individual, but multiple team members as well. Purpose drives productivity. Take it from Natalie Glance, the Chief Engineering Officer at Duolingo, who cares deeply about the product she is building. That simple fact unlocks so much for her and her team at work. As a parent, one of Natalie’s favorite things was teaching her kids how to read. She loved watching them light up when they learned a new word. She even considered volunteering as a reading tutor to drive impact in a way that felt important and satisfying. Then she heard about a little company called Duolingo which she joined in 2015 and helped grow to be the powerhouse app we all know today. After working in computer engineering for decades, she finally found a place where her passion for education and her talent for engineering and leading teams aligned. She was able to drive meaningful impact at scale. Managing an engineering team is kind of like managing a soccer team: You want your team to win the game, but you also want to develop your players so that you can win future games and future seasons. That's the idea behind my management philosophy at Duolingo— I want to see our engineers drive excellent results (and they do!) but I also want to help them develop their careers over the long term so that they can, in turn, become better engineers and better managers. Developing this kind of talent pipeline isn’t easy! I love working with Talentism’s team and my executive coach, Jeff Hunter. They’ve given me so many helpful frameworks that guide my management strategies.
