We stand with the tenants of 225, 227, and 229 23rd Street in their fight against inhumane conditions! "Tenants Fed Up With Lack of Heat, Other Violations in 3 Sunset Park Buildings" "Segal, who is listed as number 17 on the city's Worst Landlord List, has committed gross negligence, according to Housing Attorney Alex Matak from TakeRoot Justice... Shea Sigal has claimed that it's the tenants' own fault for the conditions of these buildings,' said Matak, who noted that she filed three motions for civil and criminal contempt against Segal. 'This is a slumlord and he does not care about these tenants.'" https://lnkd.in/d2DfwMAG

Today, we're spotlighting Matthew Tague and Zachary Katene of Ashurst for their incredible pro bono support. They are representing a client referred to us by our partner Women for Haitian Refugees who sought asylum because of persecution and mistreatment due to their sexuality. Matthew and Zac raised the client’s asylum claims (defensive I-589 application) in immigration court and expect to proceed to hearing in 2025. The immigration system is notoriously difficult to navigate, but having expert attorneys like Matthew and Zac on their side can make all the difference for clients.?? ? Pro bono partnerships like this are vital to our mission of working for a more equitable city, and we are grateful to Matt, Zac, and the whole team at Ashurst. You can support our work with a donation at: https://lnkd.in/eP7M-NQg. And if you’re interested in learning more about our pro bono work across all our practice areas, get in touch!

As we enter the final month of a tumultuous year, we are reflecting on the year that’s been, and the uncertain future ahead. Sometimes we are hopeful, and sometimes we are afraid. One day we’re frozen in despair, and the next driven to action. We recall the fear and outrage we felt for our migrant, queer, BIOPOC, low-income, and beloved friends, family, and community, and worry about how they might be further targeted in the months and years to come.? ? But we are also building on the lessons we learned in 2016, and the work of those who were organizing for change long before. The importance of community and mutual aid for sustaining collaborative movements that allow everyone to rest and act in turns. The immeasurable value of the too-oft invisible labor behind every demonstration and protest. The power of our collective voice. That joy, too, is part of resistance.? ? It’s an honor and a privilege for us to bring legal, policy, and research support to the grassroots and community organizations who advocate for a more equitable city for everyone. In the face of rising costs and growing movements based in hate, division, and scapegoating the most vulnerable members of our communities, this work will only get more vital. As you consider what causes to support this December and beyond, we hope you'll consider making a donation to TakeRoot Justice.?Every dollar helps us continue to support organizing for change. We cannot do it alone. Will you join us? https://lnkd.in/eP7M-NQg
