Our Vision is for a lake environment that is sustainable, healthy, and safe for the community and future generations.
关于我们
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s vision is for a Lake environment that is sustainable, healthy and safe for the community and future generations. Under the its Bi-State Compact, TRPA is directed to “establish environmental threshold carrying capacities and to adopt and enforce a regional plan and implementing ordinances which will achieve and maintain such capacities while providing opportunities for orderly growth and development consistent with such capacities,” and to “ensure an equilibrium between the region’s natural endowment and its manmade environment." As a regional planning organization for Lake Tahoe, TRPA’s most strategic role is as a partnership builder for delivery of environmental gain. TRPA works across a multiplicity of jurisdictions with concurrent responsibility and overlapping authority whose interests differ across legal boundary lines. TRPA’s strategic role is to weave together a successful environmental tapestry of interests consistent with competing political demands. Only by building the necessarily broad partnerships that can deliver action needed to achieve tangible environmental gain will the Region ever reach and maintain a sustainable foundation. TRPA monitors all content to ensure alignment with LinkedIn's community standards.

We're delighted to share that the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Sierra Nevada Chapter recently awarded #TeamTRPA a bronze spike award for the rapid and comprehensive response to the discovery of invasive New Zealand mudsnails at Lake Tahoe. TRPA and partner agencies quickly executed their crisis communication plan in September 2023 when invasive New Zealand mudsnails were detected along Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. The tiny, rice-sized snails reproduce quickly by cloning and are known to reach densities greater than 100,000 per square meter. Aquatic invasive species are a global problem that cost the U.S. more than $100 billion a year to control. Thank you PRSA!

TRPA Best in Basin awards recognize projects that exhibit outstanding planning and execution and lead the way in regional collaboration and environmental stewardship. Today, we're highlighting our Water Quality and Watershed Restoration Winner! The Upper Truckee River and Marsh Restoration Project is an ecosystem restoration project in what was once the largest wetland in the Sierra Nevada. The California Tahoe Conservancy restored the natural flow of the river to improve wildlife habitat and protect lake clarity. The project removed aquatic invasive species from the Tahoe Keys Marina, improved carbon sequestration over 250 acres of wetland, and expanded public access to Lake Tahoe through the addition of an accessible pedestrian path. As we head into the holidays, the annual season of reflection has a new twist this year with the results of national and local elections still reverberating. No matter where you landed on various races, one constant continues to shine through – Lake Tahoe transcends politics or any single election cycle. It’s important during divisive times to lean into what unites us at Tahoe – a love for the lake, our communities, and the passion to protect this special place. Our shared stewardship becomes clear when we stop to reflect on each contribution. Watercraft inspectors protecting the lake from aquatic invasive species, homeowners implementing water quality and defensible space measures, street sweepers taking fine sediment and other pollutants off our roads, and underground utility crews replacing aging sewer lines and upgrading water supply lines for fire suppression are connected by their care for the lake. Inspectors with TRPA and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District inspected over 5,600 vessels since January and intercepted 59 vessels with aquatic invasive species (AIS) on board. Though this is an increase from the 46 vessels found with AIS in 2023, it is well below the record of 129 vessels in 2021. Boaters, paddlers, anglers, and beachgoers all help lower the risk of AIS by following the Clean, Drain, and Dry protocol. Since TRPA’s boundary includes land in California and Nevada, our legal team needs to be well-versed in both state's laws. #TeamTRPA’s newest assistant attorney, Jack, fits the bill. “Working in both states was definitely an appeal,” said Jack, who has experience clerking for the Nevada Supreme Court and working for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Environment and Natural Resources Division offices in Sacramento and San Francisco. Jack helps ensure that staff are following the bistate compact that established the agency. He assists the team with researching issues related to housing, stormwater management, ecosystem restoration, and development rights. Though he grew up in Chicago, he’s no stranger to Lake Tahoe. His grandparents had a condo in Incline Village and he learned to ski on the North Shore. “Visiting Lake Tahoe throughout my childhood sparked my interest in the environment,” said Jack. “I decided to attend Bowdoin College in Maine because I wanted to be somewhere with more nature.” After college, Jack worked on immigration law at the border, which led to him pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Chicago studying Mexico City’s water crisis. He later graduated from UC Davis with an environmental law degree and moved to Northern Nevada where he rediscovered his love for the lake. “It’s been a dream to reconnect with Tahoe. Every weekend I get to ski, hike, and mountain bike in the place I’m working to protect,” said Jack.
