With recent changes in California’s legislation (https://lnkd.in/dcEcjav5), newly developed residential areas are now required to install EV charging for their residents. In addition, several workplaces are now offering free EV charging as a job perk. Both phenomena can mean only one thing; we have adopted EVs into our lives and are adapting our infrastructure to suit. We are integrating charging infrastructure into our cities in much the same way that we integrated streetlights, running water, and broadband connections years ago. Someday, it will be difficult to imagine a city without a charging infrastructure, just as it is difficult to picture a city today where people would have to go to a well for water. A new study from MIT (https://lnkd.in/gAPbaGyB) reveals that EV charging stations don’t just power cars, they power local economies.?In California, opening a charging station boosted annual spend at nearby businesses by an average of $1,500 in 2019, and $400 per business from ’21 to ’23. The increase was more pronounced for businesses in under resourced areas. Furthermore, the charger additions sparked the growth of new shops and services around “EV hot spot” areas. Just as gas stations evolved into convenience stores, EV charging hubs are charging coffee shops, restaurants, and convenience stores, with increased revenue tied to longer dwell times.? Over the past year, BEV sales have continued to grow, even as YoY growth rates have tamed. Recent years brought exponential gains-at times, doubling market share-but such rapid expansion isn’t sustainable forever. If growth had continued at that pace from 2023, EV market share would have surpassed 100%, which is, of course, impossible. Instead, we’re seeing a natural evolution, with the market growing by about 10% in advanced economies and 40% outside the US, EU, and China in 2024.?Meanwhile, BloombergNEF has noted that ICE vehicles have been in decline since hitting peak sales in 2017. While hybrid sales have seen slight increases, the global share of EVs continues to rise, reflecting broader shifts in consumer preferences. Looking at the bigger picture, this means the EV landscape is maturing, as are buyers’ expectations and aspirations. The energy industry is undergoing a momentous shift. The economics of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are being transformed. In many U.S. regions, the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for solar and wind (from $20 to $45/MWh) has dropped below that of fossil fuels ($50 to $100/MWh). Projections for the next 15 years estimate an additional 2,000GW of solar and wind capacity in the U.S. alone. To ensure dispatchability of these intermittent sources, ~1,100GW of energy storage is needed. Rapid price reductions in lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are a key complementary trend. LIB prices have declined by 97% in the last three decades, almost as though Moore’s Law were at work (see image). ? These economic shifts provide momentum to the global energy transition. Battery energy storage projects, once deemed too expensive, are now being embraced by utilities, commercial/industrial enterprises, and homeowners. In addition to cost tailwinds, technology advancements in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are revolutionizing grid management. Battery balancing technologies enhance performance and lifespan, while real-time networked inverters seamlessly integrate with a grid historically built around rotating generators.
