In his Op/positions piece "Climate and Architectural Education," author William Braham, Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, discusses three interconnected scales in which architectural education can address the challenges of the climate emergency:? "Climate change offers architectural education an opportunity to reorient its methods to the whole building enterprise, first by understanding the role of buildings as elements of urban self-organization, second as mediators of the local climate, and third as the culmination of long supply and manufacturing chains." 关于我们
TECHNOLOGY | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN is a peer--reviewed international journal dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in the field of building technology, with a particular focus on its translation, integration, and impact on architecture and design. TAD solicits, captures, and shares new knowledge in how we think, make and use technology within the building arts. Published articles feature primary research in emerging materials, construction techniques, design integration, structures, building systems, energy, environmental design, information technology, digital fabrication, sustainability and resiliency, project delivery, the history and theory of technology, and building technology education. Aimed at researchers, educators, and practitioners, the journal advances and transforms the current discourse on building based technologies with the goal of expanding, reimagining and challenging its role for architecture and design.

What can we learn from the COVID-19 pandemic if we look at it from a climate perspective? In his Op/Positions piece "The Post-Pandemic Climate," University of Minnesota College of Design professor Tom Fisher argues that digitally enabled ways of living, working, and learning that proliferated during the pandemic can offer important pathways toward reducing humanity’s ecological footprint: "While previous pandemics had negative consequences on the climate, largely because of the vast increase in industrial, agricultural, and transportation pollution, the COVID-19 experience gave us all a sense of what a more climate-friendly, low-carbon life might look like. It showed, for example, that we can dramatically reduce some of the most climate-damaging (and disease-transmitting) activities: commuting to work and flying to events." In "Climate: The Path Forward" issue editor of TAD 8:1 Climate, Hazem Rashed-Ali, asks us to expand how we conceptualize responses to climate change beyond narrow calculations of environmental performance:?? ? "We must also understand the socioeconomic, cultural, and political performances associated with these buildings and communities. These responses need to extend beyond individual solutions and identify the needed systemic changes in education and practice, which will allow for achieving the large-scale impacts required to effectively meet the current magnitude of the climate challenges we face."? ? The upcoming issue of TECHNOLOGY | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN (TAD) welcomes submissions addressing new and original research on architecture, design, and technology concerning innovation. ? ? Authors may address the following questions, but they can be broader than these areas. How do we approach and manage imaginative ideas? What is the notion of challenging or rethinking the concept of innovation in our discipline? When is it desirable? When can our actions or attitudes of privileging novelty over long-standing practices impact inventive ideas?? ? TAD invites original and innovative research from scholars, practitioners, researchers, and students. Contributions to the issue focus area are encouraged, but TAD will consider all papers that meet the TAD mission statement. The journal accepts submissions on a rolling basis, but for consideration in this issue, manuscripts are due before 11:59 pm Eastern Time on January 15, 2025.? ? Shaping urban futures through design-actionable research with a methodological focus on the urban dweller.
I am currently updating my portfolio, and I am particularly enjoying this image to signal the issues for which I was a member of the TAD editorial board, and also highlight the six issues on which I served as either Associate Editor or Issue Editor. Related, it's difficult to imagine what is required and involved to produce an issue of a peer-reviewed journal unless you've done it, as so much of the editorial work is invisible (by necessity to establish and maintain double-blind peer review). However, it is incredibly rewarding overall. Kudos to the current boards of TECHNOLOGY | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN and Journal of Architectural Education who work every day to produce the best possible journal product for 3700+ architectural educators within the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Thank you.

The regions facing rapid growth and development must build fast and be allowed to do so on their terms. Consequently, we need immediate, scalable, and impactful innovations in concrete construction for and by designers in Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs) that we can all learn from. In that spirit, I'm excited to share that our peer-reviewed article, "Concrete and Development: Context-driven Formwork Design for Scalable, Accessible and Low-carbon Concrete Structures", has been published in the Climate issue of TECHNOLOGY | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN. The article presents a generalized framework for evaluating contextual design and fabrication methods before demonstrating its use by evaluating several lab-scale structurally optimized prototypes. We discuss the urgent need for low-carbon urban concrete construction in LEDCs and present a framework for comparing fabrication methods, evaluating them for scalability, sustainability, and economy. You can access the article here: https://lnkd.in/g23zH_DD https://lnkd.in/gr3MYs9F Immense thanks to my co-authors and colleagues at the MIT Department of Architecture and The University of Virginia School of Architecture.

Yes, what Winifred Elyse Newman said!
In “Climate Changes,” Executive Editor Winifred Elysse Newman introduces readers to TAD 8.1 by sharing a call to action: “Climate binds us. Our macroenvironment is now a legal and social contract in the form of the Paris Agreement, also known as the Paris Accords. The international treaty on climate change is one of the first to unite 196 nations in a common goal to hold ‘the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2° C above pre-industrial levels’ and ‘limit the temperature increase to 1.5° C above pre-industrial levels.’ Signed on December 12, 2015, it marks the first time a unilateral global goal is not focused on war or trade, which underpins the defense of national boundaries. Instead, it underscores something more significant than these transitory identities, something apparent when you watch the clouds or a sunset: boundless nature, a continuum of sea, land, and air as a constant exchange of energy and sustenance that is Earth, and now our shared responsibility.” Visit https://bit.ly/3VI62Hk to read the full editorial. #TAD #technology #architecture #design #journal #peerreview #research #publication #designpractice #architecting #climate #climatechange
