Today is the 72-year anniversary of the death of Lewis George Watkins, a Greenville, South Carolina Police Officer that was killed during the Korean War. Watkins was born on June 6, 1925, in Seneca, SC. He eventually moved to Greenville and graduated from Greenville High School. Watkins joined the Greenville Police Department and when the war started in Korea, he took a leave of absence from the department to join the United States Marine Corps. On October 7, 1952, Sergeant Watkins’ platoon, (I Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1stMarine Division) was ordered to retake an outpost that had been overrun by the Chinese during the night. During the ensuing battle, Sergeant Watkins was wounded yet he continued to fight. He took an automatic rifle from one of his wounded Marines and placed heavy and accurate fire onto an enemy machine gun nest. The enemy threw a grenade in his direction, and he pushed his men away, picked up the grenade to throw it back at the enemy when it exploded in his hand, mortally wounding him. You are trying to save lives while someone is trying to take yours. That is the environment of the tactical health care provider and that is where our products excel.
