In the Green River Watershed, our managed forest lands help keep our drinking water clean and safe for people and wildlife. In the conservation forest zone, our Water Forester creates old forest, or late seral, conditions through forest thinning operations. The forester works with a logging contractor to selectively remove trees of certain sizes and species in a specific area of forest. The remaining forest develops a vibrant understory of vegetation and smaller trees that will eventually take the place of the older trees as they die or are affected by disturbances such as windthrow or disease. Thinning improves the health and growth of the remaining trees, improves forest structure, helps prevent wildfires, and fosters wildlife habitat. As our forests advance towards old growth and become more resilient, they play a critical role in providing clean and reliable water, now and in the future.

You're looking at a photo of Cushman No. 2 Dam from August of 1931, only a few months after it went online in December of 1930. This hydroelectric dam on the North Fork of the Skokomish River forms Lake Kokanee and generates enough clean, renewable hydropower for 18,000 homes. Much has changed in nearly 94 years, like developing fish and wildlife programs, enriching partnerships, improving habitat restoration efforts, expanding recreation opportunities, and increasing energy production. All to provide the best balance of clean energy and a healthy environment for generations to come. #TBT
