Tacoma Public Utilities provides services that are vital to our quality of life.
关于我们
A publicly owned utility since 1893, we operate three divisions – Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water, and Tacoma Rail and serve over 166,000 customers in the cities of Tacoma, University Place, Fircrest, portions of Fife, Lakewood, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Federal Way, and areas of Pierce County as far south as Roy. As the largest department in the Tacoma city government, our oversight is provided by a Public Utility Board, which is made up of members appointed by Tacoma's City Council. We operate using revenues from the sale of utility services, not from taxes. Our mission is to provide services that are vital to our quality of life.

In the Green River Watershed, our managed forest lands help keep our drinking water clean and safe for people and wildlife. In the conservation forest zone, our Water Forester creates old forest, or late seral, conditions through forest thinning operations. The forester works with a logging contractor to selectively remove trees of certain sizes and species in a specific area of forest. The remaining forest develops a vibrant understory of vegetation and smaller trees that will eventually take the place of the older trees as they die or are affected by disturbances such as windthrow or disease. Thinning improves the health and growth of the remaining trees, improves forest structure, helps prevent wildfires, and fosters wildlife habitat. As our forests advance towards old growth and become more resilient, they play a critical role in providing clean and reliable water, now and in the future.

You're looking at a photo of Cushman No. 2 Dam from August of 1931, only a few months after it went online in December of 1930. This hydroelectric dam on the North Fork of the Skokomish River forms Lake Kokanee and generates enough clean, renewable hydropower for 18,000 homes. Much has changed in nearly 94 years, like developing fish and wildlife programs, enriching partnerships, improving habitat restoration efforts, expanding recreation opportunities, and increasing energy production. All to provide the best balance of clean energy and a healthy environment for generations to come. #TBT

We're proudly celebrating our 112-year journey of producing clean, renewable hydropower. As needs continue to increase, it's clear that we must leverage dependable sources like hydropower to keep up with demand. Our power is water and is a naturally replenishing resource that is reliable, produces no carbon emissions, keeps our air clean and costs low. As we think about the future, we remain committed to providing the best energy possible for generations to come. #HydroDay
