?? Today is National Recycling Day: A Time to Reimagine Waste ?? Every year, National Recycling Day serves as a reminder of the incredible impact we can make by rethinking waste. Did you know that recycling just one ton of waste saves 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions? Or that food waste alone accounts for nearly 24% of what ends up in U.S. landfills, generating significant greenhouse gases? For commercial food waste producers, this day is a call to action. Imagine the impact if every large-scale food producer committed to reducing, recycling, and composting their food waste. Together, we could: Cut down methane emissions from food in landfills by up to 50%. Contribute to the growing trend in sustainable business practices that 88% of consumers now look for. Save millions of dollars in waste management costs while protecting our planet. What can you do today? 1. Assess your waste: Understanding where waste happens is the first step. 2. Implement composting or recycling systems: Many facilities see up to a 90% reduction in waste with the right solutions. 3. Educate your teams: Every person who understands the impact of waste reduction becomes a sustainability advocate. As we celebrate National Recycling Day, let’s commit to making these actions part of our daily practices. Together, we can move towards a circular economy where resources are cherished, not discarded. Thank you for being part of the solution! ???? #NationalRecyclingDay #Sustainability #FoodWasteReduction

Talk about practicing what you preach, the organizers of the "Climate and Compost: New Directions in NYC’s Organic Waste Policy Conference" made it simple to minimize and recycle waste. Suggested practices for all you meeting organizers out there: * Paper cups with a pen to mark and reuse your cup - genius! * Signage to know where to put what makes recycling effortless. It really can be that simple! Importantly, the content of the 2-day conference brought people from all disciplines together to share knowledge and best practices. Some takeaways: * Trustworthy data to understand the makeup of the waste stream, how to reduce it and where it goes is key to address the issue in NYC and beyond. * Recognizing and planning for labor boosts morale and increases engagement. * When thinking about serving food we need to consider managing its waste. * Understanding the role of micro-haulers, managing waste at the source and collaboration are keys to minimizing waste in communities across the boroughs. * Education is critical, and there must be motivational stimuli to participate. If incentives aren't working, follow up with a "stick." * The task at hand is underestimated, and the opportunity for impact vast! All this to say, that many, many groups and experts have been working on the challenge of food waste in NYC for decades, yet for some it's just starting. Working together, we can do this! Thank you Samantha MacBride for leading on this challenging adventure and big thanks to @Baruchmarxe #Baruch Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board (MSWAB) #NYCCompost #NYCFoodWaste #recycleNYC

A recent study published in the journal Science reveals that state bans on commercial food waste in landfills have had limited impact, with the notable exception of Massachusetts. The research examined the first five states to enact such bans: California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Massachusetts, and found that overall, the laws have not significantly reduced landfill waste. Though regulators had anticipated a reduction of 7-18%, on average, the bans resulted in just a 1.5% decrease in landfill waste. Massachusetts stood out with a 7% reduction in landfill waste over five years. While other states have started to improve their waste management programs, this study underscores the need for robust infrastructure, clear regulations, and strong enforcement to effectively tackle food waste. It's important for all of us to push for better solutions and policies to reduce food waste and its environmental footprint.
