#Challenge: Turning an Incumbent into a Fleet-Footed Digital Disruptor?? Western Union, the world’s first P2P company with over 170 years of history, operates in more than 200 countries, connecting over 120 million people through cross-border money transfers in approximately 130 currencies. Facing a rapidly changing payments sector with new fintech players, Western Union sought to boost agility and accelerate innovation. To improve digital experiences and build new digital banking products, Western Union migrated its legacy on-prem IT infrastructure to the cloud ?? and evaluated low-code platforms. OutSystems was chosen for its ability to enhance agility, deliver great digital experiences at scale, and use low-code across the entire stack. #Solution: Building a New Digital Multicurrency Banking Experience?? In November 2020, Western Union became an #OutSystems customer. The goal was to create a cloud-based IT architecture with microservices for quick integration of various systems. Rapid iteration was crucial, especially for designing customer experiences in over 200 countries with local requirements. OutSystems enabled faster development and deployment, paving the way for continuous innovation. In 2021, Western Union and its system integrator developed a new digital banking app, including a multicurrency bank account, money transfers, and a Visa Platinum debit card. The speed of OutSystems compared to traditional development was remarkable. A project that previously took ten people six months was completed by one OutSystems developer in just 15 days.? #Results: WU+ Digital Banking App Goes Live?? Western Union launched its digital banking app, WU+, in Germany and Romania in spring 2022, followed by Poland later that year, with plans to launch in Italy by the end of 2022. The advantages of OutSystems were clear: new products reached the market twice as fast as competitors, using a fraction of the resources for front-end development.
