Some businesses actually paid up. This just shows how desperate things became. You need to be paying attention. ?? If you’re not prepared, ransomware can be a problem that jumps from zero to disaster in minutes. One wrong click, one vulnerability in your system, and suddenly you’re staring at a screen demanding a ransom in Bitcoin… while all your files are locked away. ?? And if you’re thinking you’d rather just pay a ransom if it ever happened to you, think again. Even if you pay the ransom, there’s no guarantee you’ll get your files back. ?? Cyber criminals aren’t exactly known for keeping their promises. Worse still, some ransomware gangs threaten to leak your data online if you don’t pay up. ?? The damage isn’t just limited to the ransom money. We’re also talking about: ?? Lost productivity while your systems are down. ?? Reputation damage if customer data is exposed. ?? Possible fines and lawsuits if you’re in a regulated industry. In short, a ransomware attack can cripple your business faster than you can say, “We should have done that security training”. ?? So, what’s the solution? Back up your data. Seriously. If you haven’t already, make data backups a priority. This is the single best way to avoid having to pay a ransom – because if you can restore your files from a clean backup, you can tell scammers to get lost. ?? Also, train your team to spot phishing emails. Most ransomware attacks start with a scam email that tricks someone into clicking a link or downloading an attachment. ?? Even the best security won’t help you if someone on your team is too quick to click. And here’s a big one: ?? Multi-factor authentication (MFA). If you’re not using it yet, start now.
