Thank you Adam Peruta for all you're doing to share the limitless potential of generative AI with students and professionals alike in Syracuse! ??

Lately for me it's been all generative AI all the time. For those of us in media, it's an exciting time to be alive. Last week, I workshopped with a high-school media class at the Institute of Technology At Syracuse Central. They competed with each other using the text-to-image models in BoodleBox to try and recreate synthetic images I made. We often talk about AI's rapid evolution and adoption, but watching high school students dive fearlessly in drives it home. The next generation isn't just adapting to these tools — they're embracing them with natural curiosity and creativity. At another event, I joined my colleagues Dan Pacheco and Rafael "RC" Concepcion for a panel hosted by the Syracuse Press Club to discuss how generative AI is impacting local newsrooms.

Thank you to all who joined us for our 2024 SPC Media Mixer! ?? We had a terrific panel with Syracuse University's Adam Peruta, Dan Pacheco and Rafael "RC" Concepcion, all professors in the Newhouse School and experts in using Generative AI in media. They shared brilliant, illuminating and (at times) shocking insights about how quickly AI tools are changing, and best practices for reporters, editors and media professionals to integrate them in their work. This is just the tip of the iceburg. AI isn't a trend. It's not going away. It's already a huge part of our lives in so many ways. Keep talking about AI, experimenting with it, and holding yourselves and others accountable for the ethical uses of these powerful tools. Special thanks to RC, Adam and Dan for answering our questions and sharing what they're teaching at SU. Thank you also to our moderator, SPC board director Charlie Miller. Photos by our multitalented SPC board director Emily Kenny.

Today's member spotlight is talented journalist Katrina Tulloch! Katrina?is a multimedia journalist and editor for?syracuse.com, The Post-Standard, and This is CNY of Advance Media New York. Since 2013, she has reported on music, culture, politics, sports, courts, food, travel and human interest stories in Central New York. Katrina’s main passion at Syracuse.com has been elevating the newsroom’s video production and podcast storytelling. She believes deeply in the power of journalism to spread awareness, bring justice and help find solutions for complex issues that communities grapple with. She won her first New York Emmy Award in 2019 as part of a team reporting project on a rogue AA group that encouraged dangerous practices to addicts in Syracuse. In 2023, Katrina was the lead reporter on a true crime podcast and documentary called “Firecracker,” a year-long investigation into the Syracuse cold case of Carol Ryan. The podcast is nominated for a Webby Award, and the documentary has been nominated for a New York Emmy Award in 2024. Throughout 2024, Katrina has been serving as the editor in chief for This is CNY, a new resource which uses creative storytelling to celebrate living and working in Central New York. In July, she was promoted to the role of editor for Syracuse.com’s life and culture team, and now leads all feature coverage of food, art, music, theatre, outdoors and state fair news. Since 2020, Katrina has served as?the president of the Syracuse Press Club,?a not-for-profit volunteer organization which recognizes the best of Central New York journalism and provides professional development and networking events for reporters, editors, photographers, and other CNY media creators. Katrina earned her master’s degree in journalism from S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University (2012) and her undergraduate degree in English from Allegheny College (2011). She loves teaching multimedia storytelling classes in Syracuse University’s online master’s program. Katrina lives in Syracuse’s Strathmore neighborhood with her partner Chris and two cats. In her free time, she loves to travel, learn new languages, hike, paint, cook and watch horror movies. Join us in congratulating Katrina on today's member spotlight!

Today's member spotlight is the blossoming Emily Kenny! A transplant to Central New York, Emily grew up in Iowa where she also attended Buena Vista University to earn her bachelor’s in digital media and psychology. In 2019, she moved to Syracuse upon acceptance to the master’s program for multimedia, photography and design at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. After graduating from Syracuse University, Emily worked for Amy Toensing and Matt Moyer, local filmmakers and photographers who have had multiple stories published in National Geographic as an office coordinator. She also taught photography courses for the Narratio Fellowship Program; an educational fellowship open to refugee high school students. In July 2022, Emily started as a digital journalist with Spectrum News in connection with Report for America. She covers stories on agriculture and food production which makes sense for her as her father is a farmer in Iowa and she grew up raising cattle, pigs and sheep. Emily’s work combines photography, videography and writing for Spectrum News’ website. You can occasionally catch her on T.V. discussing agriculture issues faced by New York farmers. In January 2024, Emily was chosen as journalist of the year by the New York Agricultural Society and recently won an Edward R. Murrow award for her coverage of our food systems! One of her favorite times of year is the New York State Fair where she covers stories about the food, people and as a previous 4-Her, the livestock competitions. Emily serves as the secretary of the Syracuse Press Club board a not-for-profit that recognizes journalists in the Syracuse area. In her free time, she enjoys baking, gardening and hiking with her dog. Join us in congratulating Emily on today's member spotlight!
