New research published in Nature explores the adaptive evolution and early diversification of photonic nanomaterials in marine diatoms. By examining the girdle elements of silicon dioxide shells from hundreds of diatom species, the study reveals how natural slab photonic crystals evolved from quasi-ordered to highly ordered structures. These crystals, which manipulate light across the visible to mid-infrared spectrum, could inspire advancements in quantum computing and photonics.
