How far can we push the boundaries of synthetic biology? New research from the American Association for the Advancement of Science introduces Evo, a groundbreaking AI model capable of interpreting and generating genomic sequences at an unprecedented scale. By leveraging deep learning and analyzing millions of microbial genomes, Evo has developed a deep understanding of life’s genetic complexity, from single DNA bases to entire genomes. Evo accurately predicts how small DNA changes affect an organism’s fitness, produces realistic genome-length sequences, and advances biological design. This model marks a significant step forward in our ability to decode, predict, and engineer biology across multiple scales and modalities. For the full research article outlining the Evo model, view this page from science.org: https://lnkd.in/gXNd6pT9 #biomanufacturing #bioeconomy #fermentation #precisionfermentation #synbio #syntheticbiology #machinelearning #genomics #biotech #diseasediagnosis

What will it take to build a sustainable bioeconomy? Partnerships, collaboration, and a massive collective effort from the entire ecosystem. That’s why we were so excited to attend World Bio Markets & Bio Innovations Midwest 2024 a few weeks ago. Our own Cat Huyer shares her insights on how the event fostered these key elements and supports the growth of U.S. biomanufacturing. For more information about iPROOF, our state-of-the-art 32,000L+ fermentation scale-up facility in Illinois coming in early 2026, visit: https://lnkd.in/e5CxRNQ8 For Cat's full perspective, watch the video: https://lnkd.in/gJcYXN68 #biomanufacturing #bioeconomy #fermentation #precisionfermentation #deeptech #climatetech #sustainability

In recent weeks, we celebrated the two-year anniversary of the ‘Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy’. At Synonym, we’re proud to be part of the movement fueling a thriving bioeconomy here at home. Over the past two years, Synonym has been actively engaged in strengthening U.S. biomanufacturing infrastructure, ensuring that companies can innovate, produce, and scale domestically. Our participation in the iFAB Tech Hub and iPROOF project with Primient is just one example, as we work to bring more demo-scale manufacturing capacity online and offer a clear pathway for U.S. companies to progress from prototype to production. We’re excited to continue partnering with visionary leaders and policymakers who are committed to building resilient, sustainable, and economically transformative industrial biotech capabilities. The bioeconomy is poised for incredible growth—and we’re here to support and shape this journey every step of the way. For the original Executive Order, you can read it here: https://lnkd.in/gzCP96Ap And see below for a picture of some of us in D.C. a few years ago when the initiative was just getting started! #biomanufacturing #bioeconomy #fermentation #precisionfermentation #deeptech #climatetech #sustainability #policy #publicpolicy #biotech

As we commemorate Veterans Day, don’t miss this timely episode of Building the Base Podcast with two leaders from the Defense Department forging America's industrial base, Tracy Frost and Dr. Kate Sixt, for a great conversation on how biotechnology is transforming U.S. biomanufacturing capabilities and national security. Key takeaways from this episode include: - Beyond Ballistics: Biotechnology's role in defense now extends well beyond traditional military firepower to include manufacturing materials, chemicals, and specialized fuels derived through biological processes. - Public-Private Partnerships: The United States Department of Defense is building bridges between research and manufacturing by partnering with private sector innovators, including through initiatives like BioMADE, which aim to bring biomanufacturing to scale. - Environmental Advantages: Biomanufacturing offers significant environmental benefits over traditional chemical manufacturing, favoring water-based processes rather than petroleum-based methods, which makes it more sustainable. - Supply Chain Security: Domestic biomanufacturing capabilities are strengthening supply chains, particularly for industrial chemicals at critical lower tiers, reducing dependency on foreign supply chains. - New Career Paths: Biomanufacturing is growing, with career opportunities across all education levels, from technical certifications to PhDs, particularly in areas like supply chain modeling and precision engineering.
