Thank you to all who contributed to the success of our first Community Care Event!! The youth groups of Jackson County CASA and Synergy Services collaborated with Collective Action for Children to host this event focused on providing education on drug awareness and harm reduction. It was beautiful to see so many members of the community excited to learn, express themselves, and embrace their creativity. This event was hosted in response to the May 2024 Fentanyl Child Fatalities Report. In 2022, 43 children in Missouri lost their lives due to fentanyl or in combination with other substances; 23 out of 43 were between the ages of 15-17 and 20 out of 43 were under the age of 5. The overall number of fentanyl related child fatalities has nearly doubled; deaths for children under 5 has skyrocketed by over 500%. Our member agencies are committed to working together to address this crucial community issue and promoting child safety and well-being. Attendees were able to visit educational stations provided by UMSL, First Call, and KC Cares to learn about drug awareness and harm reduction. Children's Division joined us to provide information about their new Prevention Team. The Art Therapist from The Children's Place taught them how to support their mental health by creating Zentangles. Attendees were also able to choose a journal to decorate with inspirational stickers and provided with journaling prompts and affirmations to express themselves. Visiting each station granted 1 raffle ticket; there were 10 chances to win a $25 Amazon gift card. We are planning to make this an annual event led by the youth groups who will choose the topic each year!
