Fill in the blank: Gen __ was?responsible for nearly half of mass skincare sales growth in 2023. It’s Gen Alpha—the children of Millennials—who are already reshaping the beauty industry. Growing up immersed in social media, they’re not just following trends; they’re setting them. Confident, camera-ready, and loyal to what’s “in,” Gen Alpha is becoming a driving force in beauty. Here’s the proof: In 2023, Gen Alpha accounted for 49% of mass skincare sales growth (NielsenIQ). But it’s not just about what they buy—it’s how they amplify trends, creating demand and influencing others. What does this mean for beauty brands? To connect with Gen Alpha, brands need to understand their unique needs: ?? Grown-up but Fun: They want products that feel sophisticated and trendy, while still playful and age-appropriate. ?? Quality and Safety: Their Millennial parents still have the final say, so safety and quality can’t be compromised. ?? Engaging Video Content: 51% of Gen Alpha first hear about brands through YouTube (more information in this article by CosmeticsDesign: https://lnkd.in/eJs-whJX). And of course, TikTok is a favorite platform for those who have access. Our 2025 Beauty Trend Prediction: Gen Alpha have shown their love for beauty brands such as DRUNK ELEPHANT, BYOMA, Evereden or Sol de Janeiro. In 2025, we expect many more brands targeting Gen Alpha, crafting products and messaging that hit the perfect balance: aspirational for kids but reassuring for parents. #genalpha #customerinsights #2025trendpredictions #beautytrends

?? Are you ready to wear mushroom-made materials? Traditional leather and synthetic foams dominate the fashion industry, but the future of materials is growing from the ground up. Fashion for Good‘s latest pilot project is proving that mushrooms might hold the key to sustainable fashion. ? A groundbreaking coalition including PVH Corp., BESTSELLER, Vivobarefoot, PANGAIA, and Reformation is working alongside Ecovative to develop two game-changing materials: Forager AirLoom? hides as a leather alternative MycoFlex? foam as a sustainable foam solution What makes this revolutionary? As stated in the report, "Ecovative's petrochemical-free mycelium hides and foam alternative promises to be a more sustainable alternative, grown in a fraction of time compared to animal leather, and with minimal resources." This 2.5-year initiative concentrates on crucial development phases. The collaborative team is testing and refining both foam and textile material applications while defining key performance attributes. They're determining precise material volumes needed for concept products, demonstrating commercial production operations that achieve finished product specifications, and producing pilot versions to showcase the product potential. This isn't just a concept—it's moving toward commercial reality. As Fashion for Good demonstrates, the future of fashion materials is evolving through innovation in fungi technology. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward bringing these alternative materials to market, supporting the fashion industry's commitment to sustainable innovation and consumer-conscious product development. #sustainablefashion #materialinnovation #fashioninnovation

Can the next generation of animal-derived products be cruelty free? Animal-derived ingredients are incredibly common in consumer products— take honey, egg whites, snail mucin, beef tallow for example. Biotech, however, is flipping the script. A new wave of ingredients is emerging, delivering the some of the same benefits while being revolutionary for both animal welfare and the environment. How? ?? Two game changing technologies are leading the change: 1. Precision Fermentation: Teaching microorganisms to be protein powerhouses 2. Cellular Cultivation: Growing real animal products, in a lab ?? Take MeliBio, which uses microbial fermentation to create plant-based honey that’s molecularly identical to traditional honey, offering a vegan alternative without ever involving bees. ?? Bored Cow uses fermentation to create a milk protein that’s fortified with nutrients, lactose-free, and vegan-friendly—providing a sustainable alternative to traditional dairy. ?? Geltor’s Collume? is a groundbreaking vegan collagen created through precision fermentation. It offers significant benefits for both skin and hair —without using animals. ?? Then there’s VitroLabs Inc. By collecting a one-time biopsy from a cow, they use cell regeneration to grow high-quality animal hides in just weeks significantly reducing waste and environmental impact. ?? Avant is pushing the future of cell cultivation even further, using their fish cell technology to develop Zellulin, a biopeptide complex for skincare applications. #Biotech #Crueltyfree #Cellularcultivation #Precisionfermentation

?? Only 68% of consumers claim to be familiar with bioplastics, with many still unaware of how they differ from conventional fossil-based plastics (Source: PLASTICS (Plastics Industry Association), 2024). It’s crucial for brands to distinguish between types of plastics to allow consumers to dispose of plastics the correct way. This chart simplifies the categorization of plastics into four types: 1. Biobased & Biodegradable: Bio-derived materials like PLA, PHA, and starch blends break down naturally and also come from renewable sources. Shoutout to Shellworks, Clement Packaging, and Regen? Bioplastic for their innovative solutions redefining the future of sustainability ??. 2. Biobased & Non-Biodegradable: Materials like bio-derived PE and PET reduce reliance on fossil fuels but don't naturally decompose. 3. Fossil-based & Biodegradable: Fossil-derived plastics like PBAT offer biodegradability, though they’re still petroleum-based. 4. Fossil-based & Non-Biodegradable: Conventional plastics, which persist in the environment. Recycling solutions, like those from Envision Plastics, help repurpose conventional plastics and are essential to reducing environmental impact ??. As reflected in this chart, a bioplastic is either derived from renewable biological sources, biodegradable, or both, offering an alternative to traditional fossil-based, non-degradable plastics. Understanding these distinctions helps us make informed choices about sustainable materials. #Sustainability #Bioplastics #BiodegradablePlastics

The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and Strategic Materials have published findings a study focused on the recyclability of cosmetic glass. This collaborative effort addresses the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions in the cosmetics sector.??? ? According to an ELC press release from 10.03 “learnings from the study will support the industry in designing glass that yields a higher output of recyclable cullet in an effort to increase glass recyclability rates around the world.” ?? Study Objectives: 1. Understanding Sortability: Analyzing what makes cosmetic glass packaging more efficiently sortable 2. Luxury and Recyclability: Tackling challenges in luxury decorations, colors, and formats to ensure recyclability 3. Material Selection: Defining criteria for choosing recyclable glass packaging materials 4. Best Practice Design Guide: Offering guidelines for product developers, package designers, suppliers, and brands A significant finding of the study, after looking at more than 200 cosmetic glass packages, was that glass with above 5% light transmission was more likely to be sorted correctly as glass. Therefore, this should be specified during the design process. “Through our collaboration with ELC, we are able to uncover what kind of glass cosmetics packaging can be most effectively recycled in practice and at scale and our hope is to remove barriers so that we can maximize recyclability yields and outputs to drive circular recovery throughout the system.” said Laura Hennemann, Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, SMI. The publication of this case study represents the collaboration we hope to see more of in the industry. Sharing knowledge and best practices across the industry benefits all. The Upcycled Beauty Company collaborated with Covalo & in-cosmetics Global to put together a Zero Waste Beauty Report. Here are our notes. ?? 1. Ingredients & Formulations ???? The estimated market size of upcycled cosmetic ingredients was valued at $231.5 million in 2021 and expected to reach $433.5 million by 2031 at CAGR of 6.6%.?(Allied Market Research) The term “upcycled” entered the top 20 most searched keywords by formulators.?(Source: Covalo) Upcycled ingredients aren't just coming from food waste, but forest waste as well. Working with nature’s biocapacity, look into what Innomost and Mets? Group are up to in their partnership. Ashland is onto this too, with their new Santalwood Biofunctional ingredient, which was developed using AI and upcycled wood chips. 2. Packaging & Materials ? 40% of plastic production is used for single-use packaging. (National Geographic) Companies changing the packaging game include: traceless materials, Clement Packaging, Notpla. Shellworks not mentioned, but we thought they should be, so adding them to our own roundup! Packaging waste isn't just a plastic problem. It is estimated that wood consumption accounts for around 10% of the world’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. With the planet on track to harvest 50% more wood by 2050, it’s clear that brands need to reimagine their paper and cardboard consumption.?(World Resources Institute) 3. Greener Manufacturing ? Manufacturing is responsible for 1/5 of carbon emissions, consuming 54% of the world’s energy.?(weforum) Brands, take note from Liah Yoo at KraveBeauty | Certified B Corp. Following production of a re-formulated version of their bestselling Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser, the brand was left with more than 4,500 litres of bulk that didn’t meet specs. Instead of wasting it, they reworked the formula to create a body wash. There are so many good bits of information in this report. ?? Full report for free here: https://lnkd.in/dEgjAPYe
