What should we be doing when the job market is slow? ?? I think we all go through this, especially as freelancers. It always seems like feast or famine to me. No job opportunities will pop up for months and it feels bleak. Then all of a sudden I get three emails out of nowhere at the same time and it goes from quiet to overwhelming. The key is making use of that downtime. Sure, it would be a great time to catch up on movies or beat the video game you've been avoiding. However, it's a crucial time to level up your skills. As creatives, we should never get complacent, there is ALWAYS room for improvement. On the music side of my career, one of my favorite things to do during these lulls is focus on Sync music (music to be licensed for commercials, TV, games etc.) On one hand I am still writing, producing, mixing and keeping my skills sharp. On the other, there is a chance that something I'm working on gets chosen and turns into income. This keeps me feeling motivated and active when I don't have a specific project to be working on. You are also building up your catalog and demo reel of work. I recently came across an opportunity for sync music here on LinkedIn. Mac McIntosh runs a cool (and affordable ?? ) Patreon for sync placements. He has a running list of projects you can submit for. It shows the media type (game, commercial, etc), pay rate, deadline and a reference for the type of song they are looking for.
