Preventing suicide is a complex and sensitive issue, but there are several steps you can take to help someone who may be at risk: 1. Recognize the Warning Signs: Behavioral Signs: Withdrawal from friends and activities, changes in sleep patterns, reckless behavior, increased substance use. Emotional Signs: Hopelessness, talking about being a burden, extreme mood swings, expressions of unbearable pain. Verbal Signs: Talking about wanting to die, expressing feelings of being trapped, mentioning having no reason to live. 2. Engage in Open and Non-Judgmental Communication: Ask Directly: If you suspect someone is struggling, ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide. This can provide relief and show them they are not alone. Listen Actively: Be present and listen without interrupting or offering immediate solutions. Allow them to express their feelings. Avoid Judgement: Refrain from dismissing their feelings or offering simplistic solutions. Show empathy and understanding. 3. Offer Support and Encourage Professional Help: Encourage Professional Support: Suggest they speak with a mental health professional, such as a therapist or counselor. Offer to help them find resources or go with them to an appointment if they’re comfortable. Stay Connected: Regularly check in with them to offer continued support. Let them know you care and that they are not alone. Remove Access to Means: If possible, help reduce access to means of suicide (e.g., firearms, medications). 4. Know Emergency Resources: Emergency Contacts: Be aware of local emergency numbers and encourage the person to reach out if they are in immediate danger. Suicide Prevention Hotlines: Familiarize yourself with national or local suicide prevention hotlines and share these resources. In the U.S., for example, you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Crisis Text Lines: Texting services (like “HOME” to 741741 in the U.S.) provide immediate support via text message. 5. Take Care of Yourself: Seek Support: Supporting someone at risk can be emotionally taxing. Don’t hesitate to seek support for yourself, whether through friends, family, or a mental health professional. Know Your Limits: Recognize that you can’t do everything on your own. Encourage the involvement of other supportive people in the person’s life. 6. Promote Long-Term Prevention: Foster a Supportive Environment: Encourage social connection and healthy coping strategies. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn more about mental health and suicide prevention to better support those in need. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, reaching out for help is a vital step.

On National Dog Day, we want to see pictures of the doggone best girls and boys of the therapy world! We love referring our medication management clients to therapy and sometimes a furry friend is needed at those appointments! This is Brynlee - she is the opposite of a therapy dog and often needs her own therapy for her social anxiety disorder. She's a bit nervous about strangers, but is quite the wiggle butt when it comes to the people she loves! She loves long walks, agility, and all the treats. #NationalDogDay #TherapyDogs #MentalHealthMatters

Happy #NationalDogDay to all the therapy dogs that bring their clients so much love and comfort!
Happy National Dog Day! Dogs have an incredible ability to lift our spirits and improve our mental health. Their unconditional love, companionship, and playful energy can reduce stress, ease anxiety, and help us feel more connected. Whether it's through a comforting cuddle or a simple walk in the park, our furry friends remind us of the simple joys in life. ???? #MentalHealthMatters #NationalDogDay

One encouraging step forward in prioritizing recovery over incarceration and emphasizing mental health healing and societal reintegration. Thank you Mike Johnston for your impact on the mental well being of the residents of Denver!
Roads to Recovery connects people who are dealing with mental health challenges or substance misuse to the services they need, with the hope that they avoid the criminal justice system. A coordinated effort can make this a reality.
