Government rips up rules to fire-up nuclear power More nuclear power plants will be approved across England and Wales as the Prime Minister slashes red tape to get Britain building - as part of his Plan for Change. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is slashing red tape to get Britain building—fast-tracking Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and new nuclear projects across England and Wales. For too long, outdated regulations held the UK back while China builds 29 reactors and the EU pushes ahead with 12 more. Meanwhile, Britain—once a nuclear pioneer—hasn’t built a new power station since 1995. That changes today. What’s Happening? ?? SMRs included in planning rules for the first time – unlocking faster approvals. ?? Scrapping the outdated “8-site” rule – enabling nuclear anywhere across England & Wales. ?? Ending expiry dates on planning – giving long-term certainty to investors. ?? Launching a Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce – reporting directly to the Prime Minister to cut through bureaucracy. Why This Matters? ? Thousands of highly skilled jobs ? Cheaper, cleaner, secure energy ? Investment in critical infrastructure & AI-powered industries ? Ending reliance on foreign energy & volatile prices PM Keir Starmer: "For too long, our energy security has been at the mercy of foreign powers. My government was elected to deliver change. We're backing the builders, not the blockers, to deliver jobs, growth, and cheaper energy." Britain’s Plan for Change is here. The UK is back in the nuclear game.
