Swords to Plowshares is a Bay Area-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting nearly 3,000 homeless, low-income and at-risk veterans in the Bay Area every year. Our mission is to support veterans as they navigate the challenges of post-military life, and to prevent and end veteran homelessness through wrap-around care and informed advocacy.

Swords to Plowshares seeks?People?Coordinator. This position will report to the?People?Resources Manager and, as part of the?People?and Culture department, support the organization in all areas including cultural humility, employee well-being and culture, workforce improvement, staff training and professional development tracking. The?People?and Culture?Coordinator?is part of the?People?and Culture team and will work closely with the?People?Generalist,?People?Resources Manager, DEI specialist, and the Director of?People?and Culture. The successful candidate will have some Human Resources experience working in a community-based setting and working with staff from diverse backgrounds, including former or current veterans,?people?with lived experience, and?people?that hold identities that have been marginalized by society. This position is responsible for supporting Swords’ and individual employees in a wide range of areas, including benefits, performance and interpersonal issues, recruiting and onboarding, employee morale and retention, and training.?? Our staff of approximately 200?people?works to achieve a racially, socially, and economically just society in which all veterans can thrive. Swords to Plowshares’ commitment to addressing institutional racism works to ensure all veterans have equal access to support, resources, and services. We seek someone who understands that any organization is only as good as the?people?who work there, the relationships that they establish and sustain, and the organizational culture that ensures everyone is heard and valued. The successful candidate will welcome feedback, be open to new ideas, and support personal growth and development and organization-wide improvement. In addition, the successful candidate must understand that discretion in this role is paramount as is the ability to create safe, candid, and confidential spaces for staff to communicate concerns.

  • COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Thanks to the work of Mason Cook, who chose to support Swords to Plowshares for his Eagle Scout project, the food pantry at Maceo May Apartments is fully stocked! Since October, Mason has been gathering and organizing donations that will benefit the residents at our Treasure Island housing site. Having access to food is a major help to many of our residents, who are either low-income or have mobility issues that impact going grocery shopping regularly. Thank you for a job well-done, Mason!
