Michael Hanestad, PE, Senior Power System Engineer at RLC, recently presented a paper titled “National Grid Pilot of Phase-EQ Technology” at CIGRE Grid of the Future 2024. This collaboration between RLC Engineering, National Grid, and Switched Source demonstrates how innovative solutions are shaping the future of power systems. ? Key Highlights: ?? Switched Source’s Phase-EQ device dynamically mitigates power imbalances in three-phase distribution systems, reducing neutral currents and voltage imbalance. ?? Simulation and field results showed improved power quality, increased system capacity, and deferred infrastructure costs. ?? A Benefits-Cost Analysis (BCA) demonstrated payback periods of 5-6 years within the device’s anticipated 20-year lifespan, highlighting its cost-effectiveness as a solution. ? Switched Source LLC, a grid optimization startup founded by The University of Chicago Booth School of Business alumni Lane Nelson (’17) and Charles Murray, P.E. (’17), was founded in a Booth classroom in 2016. Initially funded by Polsky Center at the University of Chicago's Innovation Fund, the company has won more than $115 million in electric utility projects and two recent U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grants, allowing it to expand to a 20,000 square foot Chicago facility.
