Can dietitians be trusted? The answer is yes! With the recent Washington post article slamming dietitians who call themselves “#antidiet” dietitians claiming that we’re all paid by Big Food (??) … I wanted to share my thoughts on this as a practicing #physicianassistant and dietitian. I think this raises a bigger issue of language and how we define the words we use. Although I understand what a dietitian means when they say they are “anti-diet”, the terminology can be confusing to the public and medical professionals. Especially when doctors say, “go see a dietitian to put you on a diet”. The term diet simply means “the kinds of foods a person habitually eats.” When a dietitian says they are “anti-diet” it means they want to help people have a healthy relationship with food and heal from food fear, binging or restriction and learn to eat all foods in moderation. Dietitians try to teach people how to choose a dietary pattern that they could follow the rest of their lives. Ultimately, what dietitians mean when they say anti-diet, is they are anti-fad diet. Anti-quick fix diet. Anti-TikTok trends. They simply want people to make the best choices for their body, while still enjoying cultural and celebratory foods without shame or guilt. Dietitians take a whole-person approach and work with patients mental and emotional challenges when it comes to their health. Yes, #dietitians come in all flavors - bc we’re human ?? Some favor plant-based eating. Some recommend keto diet. Some suggest meal replacement shakes. Ultimately, the dietitian wants you to be at your healthiest, mentally, physically and emotionally, whatever diet that may be. So yes, dietitians can be trusted and they should be viewed as a valuable member of the #healthcare team . ?? Share your thoughts or consider reposting this to your network.
