Last week, we honored the legacy of Vincent O. Carter with two special events in NY and PA! On Feb 18 at UBS in NYC, in honor of Black History Month, Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, Dr. June Graham, and Dr. André Siamundele led a powerful discussion on The Bern Book—Carter’s memoir and meditation on race in midcentury Europe and America. On Feb 20 at Lincoln University, scholars, students, and literature lovers gathered for a conference celebrating Vincent O. Carter’s work, featuring Dr. Jesse McCarthy, Dr. June Graham, and other experts on Carter. The conference was accompanied by an exhibit of manuscripts, historical records and artwork. Born in Kansas City and a graduate of Lincoln University, PA, Carter left the U.S. in 1953 for Bern, Switzerland, where he crafted The Bern Book. The events we organized mark an important step in building a literary canon around Carter. While his work has gained recognition in recent years—with his literary estate now in the Swiss Literary Archives and both of his books translated into German—this was the first time his legacy was honored with dedicated events in the U.S. ?? #BlackHistoryMonth

His take? ?? Math is a creative language. ?? Too much optimization can limit innovation. ?? Better math could make AI more reliable. Figalli’s work reminds us that big breakthroughs happen when we step outside our comfort zones. What’s a time you took a risk that led to something great? #Mathematics #Innovation #FieldsMedal

?? ETH Zürich researchers have developed a gene switch that uses a nitroglycerine skin patch to activate implanted cells, potentially revolutionizing cell therapies for metabolic diseases like diabetes. The switch triggers GLP-1 production, aiding insulin release and appetite control. Unlike previous methods, it uses only human components, reducing risks. ????
